How Data Loss Can Cause Payroll Problems
There are many forms of data a company may keep that are vital to its
operations, but pay and remuneration information is vital.
Whenever anything goes wrong there can be serious consequences for
staff, who not only get a shock when they look at their bank
balances, but may find they are unable to honour automated
payments, incurring bank charges as a result, which they may or
may not be able to get refunded.

2. Just such a problem occurred in August at South Tees Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust, the BBC has learned after a freedom of information
request. The trust ended up having to stump up the bank charges for
60 of the 8,500 staff who were paid late.
A spokesperson for the trust said a "human error" had caused the
problem, adding: "We now have control checks to mitigate risk at all
stages of the payroll process, tighter processes in the payroll
department and three signatures need to be obtained, including one
from a senior member of the finance team, to verify dates and
amounts."

3. Such data may be held electronically and this opens up the possibility
that if this goes missing, that may also cause such problems. Indeed, a
loss of information may mean it is harder to identify the scale and
nature of the problem, except once the staff themselves raise the issue,
which could slow down its resolution.
For this reason, it is vital to have such data backed up and security is
also important. In the latter case, an obvious potential problem is that if
the information falls into the wrong hands, it could be leaked with
damaging consequences, such as letting staff know exactly how much
some of their colleagues earn.

4. IT problems affecting hospitals recently included a major computer
failure at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, which lasted two days and
caused the cancellation of operations, outpatient appointments and
chemotherapy sessions, as staff could not gain access to clinical data.
