In 2006 further construction took place
for the new Pier 6, built specifically to
accommodate the new Airbus A380
superjumbo. At a height of 24.1m, the
A380 is higher than four double decker
buses stacked on top of each other.
We were appointed by contractors
Target Site Services to freeze the
hot and cold water mains to enable
isolation valves to be cut in. In order
to get the hot water cold and non-
flowing, we had to carry out a line stop
to the 28mm copper hot water return
pipework, located in T3 arrivals.
Working in a riser in an office, we bolted
on a line-stop tee, then carried out
an inflated balloon line-stop. Having
stopped the hot water circulation,
the pipework was able to cool down
sufficiently to be able to freeze the
pipe and carry out the pipe work
modifications, crimping in new isolation
valves, giving control of the area
downstream from the new valves.
We were able to carry out the whole
process within 5 hours, on schedule
and enabling Target Site Services to
continue with their works.
Terminal 3 at Heathrow handles over 19 million passengers a
year to long-haul destinations. First built in 1961 and expanded
in 1970, the terminal then underwent extensive refurbishment
between 1987 and 1990.
