• R1 Deuteronomy 34:5-6
--What does this mean?
**appeared at Mount of Transfiguration(Matt 17:4)
**Kirtland Temple April 3,1836 (D&C 110:11)
• R2 Joshua 1:1-3

** How would you have felt trying to
replace Moses?
6. The Lord calls Joshua
new --- novice
• The son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim.
• First called Oshea.
• Moses changed his name into Joshua.
• Meaning = he shall save or the salvation of Jehovah.
• In the original Hebrew both Joshua and Jesus were the
same name. ---a “TYPE” of Christ
• At the Temple dedication Exodus33
• Went up onto the mount and waited for Moses 40 days.
• Among the 12 sent to spy out the land of Canaan. Only he
and Caleb brought back a favorable report.
• Joshua and Caleb were the only ones of the generation
over 20 years old to survive the 40 years in the wilderness
because "they wholly followed the Lord" (Numbers 32:11-
12).
7. Advice to Joshua
“Do not turn to the right or left”
R1 Joshua 1:5-6
R2 Joshua 1:7
R1 Joshua 1:8
What do you think it means?
MEDITATE
What 2 promises does it give?
9. Moving Forward in Faith
“Recall how the Israelites came to the river
Jordan and were promised the waters would
part, and they would be able to cross over
on dry ground. Interestingly, the waters did
not part as the children of Israel stood on
the banks of the river waiting for something
to happen; rather, the soles of their feet
were wet before the water parted. The faith
of the Israelites was manifested in the fact
that they walked into the water before it
parted. They walked into the river Jordan
with a future-facing assurance of things
hoped for” (Ensign, Sept. 2007, 63)
10. Ark of the Covenant
What three items were
carried in the Ark?
•Ten Commandments
•Pot of Manna
•Aaron’s staff/rod

to see God’s hand in our

faith assure us of God’s

14. JOSHUA’s
farewell
Whatever we place as most
important in our lives is our god.
If that is not the Lord, then we
have taken upon us strange gods
to follow, whether it be money,
work, family, celebrities, material
goods, or sin. We cannot serve
God and riches at the same time.
Each of us must choose for
ourselves whom we shall serve.
Most of us like dealing in the
gray areas of life, allowing for
time with God, but also allowing
for time with other gods and
idols in our lives.
R2 Joshua 24:14-15
How can we show that we
have chosen to follow him?
16. Leave no trace
R1 Joshua 23:8,12-13
Why? Sounds so harsh!!
Didn’t listen and it came back to
bite them!
• Snares
• Traps
• Scourges
• thorns
What are some traps that
we face today?
We are in Joshua today---follow along in slideshare.com (Hyperlinks to scriptures)
Need a volunteer helper for a minute
Stand the paper on it’s edge and balance the book on top
Explain that Joshua became strong as he allowed God to shape his character. Similarly, as we allow God to shape our character, we can become strong and accomplish the things the Lord wants us to do.
Once a again I need 2 volunteers for scripture reading
Since our lesson is about being strong—I’ve attached a roll of extra strong mints for incentive
Also pass these around if anyone would like to try them– WARNING they are extra strong!!
Since this is the only week we spend in the book of Joshua—here is a quick overview
Notice we span 25 years in this book
Joshua as the author of this book is a big question– many differing opinions on who made this record– No one actually ever takes credit
--we do know it was written in retrospect and possibly abridged/ similar to what Mormon did for a lot of the BOM
Here is a background for this lesson– 40 years in the wilderness with Moses at the helm but let’s have R1
MININSTER—how has the term changed for you in lieu of the changes made at General Conference?
Moses was the “lawgiver” Joshua was the leader to the promised land
Joseph was the “lawgiver” Brigham Young was the leader to Zion
Pres. Monson was a great storyteller and man of service---Pres. Nelson is…. How do you perseve him?
Back to our opening object lesson
Joshua has been shaped-prepared-buoyed
He is definitely NEW but not a NOVICE
The Lord gives some great advice to Joshua about being a leader in Joshua 1:5-6
actually says this phrase 3times in the next few verses
this phrase actually has a lot of meaning to me—appears 3x in my blessing—What do you think it means?
Let’s read the next bit of advice in vs 7
One more great tidbit of advice that is great for any leader in vs 8
New RS Pres– training from Stake
So now Joshua is fortified—his first assignment is to cross the Jordan River let’s read about it in Joshua 3:14-15
David A. Bednar talked about crossing the River Jordan
What does this mean? How do we achieve it?
Just for fun—I have a trivia challenge with the Ark of the Covenant
Interesting to see what happens to all the manna they have been receiving for 4o year---Joshua 5:12
After crossing the Jordan let’s read what Joshua asked them to do in ch 4:4-7
Marlin K Jensen—said this
I’ve asked 3 people to complete our Memorial here by sharing ways that they are creating their own memorials for future generations today
It is Memorial weekend!!
I’ve asked three people to finish off our Memorial here—What are some ways that you have remembered important events?
Now that they crossed the Jordan they are ready to take Jericho—
History channel produced a fun miniseries
Not put out by the church but the OT stories are depicted in some great ways---------------------------------New Testament gets a bit sketchy
We are going to watch a 10 minute clip from it 3 main people to take note of—Joshua, Rahab, Commander of the Lord’s army
I did get permission from the Sunday School president to show this so any complaints can go straight to him
This is one version depicting how it could have possible been, truth is we don’t know exactly, no one does.
They continue to conquer many more cities and then it comes time to divide the Land
What are some things you notice about this division? Is it equal? Are our ward/stake divisions always equal?
R2– anyone bothered by the fact that Joseph’s tribe always split with Ephraim and Manasseh? Joshua explains Joshua 17:17
R1-notice there is no Levites—Why
While we’ve got the map up---Joseph’s body that was brought out of Egypt 40 years ago now finally has a resting place in Shechem
Joshua is now 110yrs old and ready to die
As with most great prophets Joshua leaves the Cof I with some great parting messages, that ring just as true today-let’s read in Josue 24:14-15
There is a great sound bite from one of our prophets—talking about Joshua and choosing this day
Can anyone guess which Prophet
Joshua is giving his great final counsel to the Israelites--------------very important warning ; listen for it Joshua 23:8, 12-13
Next week we will see how well the Israelites listened to Joshua’s parting advice to keep the Cannanite world at bay
As we study in JUDGES lesson #19 with Bro Thayne
Testify to you—that God is with us just like he was with Joshua and we need to be Strong and Courageous in living this Gospel and allow the Lord to shape and fortify us!
In the Name of Jesus Christ AMEN
