Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Manaul (Student & Provider)
Why AED?
1. What is an AED?
Do I Need one?
1 What is an AED?
2 Do I need to be
certified to use one? Can
it hurt someone if used
improperly?
3 Who is required to
have an AED who is not?
3 PHILIPS HeartStart
Onsite or FRx?
4 What is Medical
Oversight? Where should I
get it from?
With quick response
and implementation
of an AED and
treatment at a
hospital the chance of
survival can be as
good as 50% but any
delay in one of the
links in that chain the
chance of survival
can decrease to 30%
or less.
2. The AED itself, if
properly maintained,
cannot shock a heart
that is in most heart
rhythms. It is
designed to only
shock two different
types of rhythms, you
aren't awake for
either of those
rhythms.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest or SCA is as defined by the National
Institute of Health as the "Condition in which the heart
suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating." If it isn't treated
within minutes death will occur. An AED (Automatic External
Defibrillator) is a device that is used to shock the heart back
into the correct electrical rhythm. In 70% of SCA the patient
does not survive without the use of an AED.
1. When the heart
stops beating or isn't
beating in an efficient
rhythm the blood
cannot get to the vital
organs, mainly the
brain, to sustain life.
My students will have
heard me talk about
the Cardiac Chain Of
Survival which is 1.
Early Recognition of
Cardiac Arrest. 2.
Early CPR pushing
hard and fast in the
center of the chest. 3.
Early use of an AED
to re-establish a life
sustaining cardiac
rhythm. 4. Early
treatment at a
hospital.
I have had many
students ask, can it
be used on someone
who doesn't need it?
The answer is NO, it
will only shock if it
recognizes a rhythm
that is shockable
such as ventricular
fibrillation or
ventricular
tachycardia. The AED
will say "Not A
Shockable Rhythm." if
it doesn't detect one
of those two rhythms
and therefore cannot
shock the patient.
The State of
California has
legislated that if you
use an AED in good
faith

that has been properly maintained and
regularly tested you are not liable for any civil
claims. This means if you use the AED
correctly and it was looked after as it should be
with proper medical oversight and
maintenance program you can't get sued no
matter the outcome.
3. Who is required to have an AED?
According to the California Legislature Adult
Residential facilities for persons with special
healthcare needs, Health Care facillities such
as doctors offices and Dental offices, Health
Studios which according to California Bill
SB127 section H is defined as "A facility
permitting the use of it's facilities and
equipment or access to its facilities and
equipment, to individuals or groups for physical
exercise, body building, reducing, figure
development, fitness training, or any other
similar purpose, on a membership basis." a full
version of SB127 can be found at http://goo.gl/
Q83kkN It is always a good idea to contact
your local EMS/Fire headquarters to find out if
this applies to your business.
Truthfully the question shouldn't be am I
required to have one, but it should be: Should I
have an AED? As a CPR and First Aid
instructor I would encourage you to ask
yourself 1. Do I have a wide range of clientel
coming into my place of business during the
day? 2. Do I engage in a high stress
environment? 3. Is there a fitness area or pool
(such as in the case of apartment complexes)
that people have access to? If you answered
Yes to any of those questions you should
consider buying an AED. Places that you might
find an AED already would be Shopping Malls,
Airports, Churches, Public Schools, other
public buildings such as libraries, parks and
public pools.
You do not need to be certified to use one,
they are designed to be very simple to use,
you simply follow the verbal and visual prompts
on the machine.
4. What is Medical Oversight? Medical
Oversight is required for any owner of an AED
that could be used by the public such as those
found in shopping malls, places of busines like
Health Studios. This is an annual subscription
that ranges in price from $200 - $250 per year
per AED and is a web portal that the company
can track maintence and testing. The contract
usually includes a physician that reviews these
records regularly, reviews any incidents that the
AED is used, helps to maintain battery and pads
so that they are always in date and working.
Typically, what happens is if the machine is used
then it is sent off to a company that has a
physician to review the records of the event on
the machine, it is then checked for damage and
returned with a fresh batery and pads.
