5. INTRODUCTION OF
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
❖Environmental studies are the study of human interaction with the
environment and in the interests of solving complex problems.
❖Environment includes which we are directly or indirectly dependent for
our survival , whether it is living component like animals, plant
or non –living component like soil, air and water.
❖The word ‘Environment’ is derived from the French
word ‘Environner’ which means to encircle, around
or surround.

➢Environmental history emerged as a new field
of study as environmental problems began to
rise up the global political agenda in the 1960s
and 1970s.
➢Its primary goal is to show how environmental
change and human actions are interconnected.
7. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
❑Environmental studies is a multidisciplinary academic field which
systematically studies human interaction with the environment.
❑Environmental studies connects principles
from the physical sciences, commerce /
economics . The humanities and social
sciences to address complex contemporary
environmental issues.

❖Environmental study is a key instrument for bringing about
the changes in the knowledge , value , behaviour and lifestyles
required to achieve sustainability and stability within and
among countries.

➢Environmental education helps students
understand how their decisions and actions
affect the environment, build knowledge and
skills necessary to address complex
environmental issues , as well as ways,
we can take action to keep our environment
healthy and sustainable for the future.

❑ In the past we have seen environmental movements
bringing positive changes
to the nation.
❑ But with the increase in population and demands of
the consumers and the main focus of the governments
engaging in economic and military development in the
country , the environment factor has been largely
ignored.
❑ Our natural environment makes human life possible ,
and our cultural environment helps in define who we
are , It is therefore essential that our population and
economic growth are environmentally sustainable.
