SERVICE
ROAD
The service road should be kept, to provide access to the north and
eastern part of the site, in case you wish to make large scale alterations
in the future and also for emergencies like fire.
It can be concealed by letting it become covered by natural vegetation.
It will eventually merge with the garrigue around and still be accessible.
Walkway 1
Walkway to seating place A. Made with concrete paved with natural
stone in continuity to the existing steps.
Walkway 2
Walkway to seating place B
Covered with gravel and
blending with the vegetation.
3. THE GARIGUE GARDEN IN KOS
DETAILS
SEATING PLACE A
A small amphitheater creates a spot for gathering (it
could contain a fire pit for chilly nights ), away from the
house, with a magnificent view, among an olive grove.
SEATING PLACE B
A low stone wall along the path keeps the soil of the steep slope
above and creates a seating bench beneath a cluster of conifer
trees. A hidden spot to submerge in the harsh garigue landscape,
under the shade of the pines.

The planting follows and enhances the
curved lines of the hardscaping which I really
like, by using large volumes, uniform lines and
rhythmically repeating elements of single
species .
The low shrubs are mixed, creating a
transition to the naturalistic landscape on the
slope above.
A date palm was always planted in the
garden traditionally as a symbol of prosperity (
and for the dates of course).
TEUCRIUM
The Italian cypresses conceal and shade the SE
back side of the house.
The Judas trees, lavenders and teucriums all flower
in different hues of purple.
The grey foliage of the lavender and teucrium
contrasts the dark green of the cypress, pistacia
and myrtle.

FRONT PATIO GARDEN
The ornamental grasses ( Stipa
tennuifolia) combine well both with the
succulents, the perennials and the
garigue plants and also stand alone
handsomely in the gravel . This way they
act as a connecting element for the
different types of vegetation. They also
offer motion as they wave at the slightest
wind.
Yellow and blues flowering in the spring
and early summer, give way to the contrast of
the grey and dark green foliage of the rest of
the year.
Natural flat stepping stones connect the
verandas.
