1. We
all
need
some
human
touch
There
are
some
people
that
believe
alternative
therapies
work
only
by
the
‘placebo
effect’
where
a
person
convinces
themselves
they
feel
better
as
a
result
of
their
treatment.
However
how
does
this
apply
to
people
with
learning
disabilities?
With
fewer
inhibitions
people
with
learning
disabilities
are
unlikely
to
feel
pressure
to
conform
or
convince
themselves
they
feel
better
if
they
don’t.
I’d
like
to
share
a
recent
experience
I
encountered
with
one
of
my
care
home
clients.
This
particular
80
year
old
lady
because
of
her
learning
difficulties
tends
to
squint
her
eyes,
screw
her
face
up
and
chew
on
her
tongue
and
gums,
completely
oblivious
to
anyone
around
her.
Usually
I
would
treat
her
with
a
relaxing
hand
massage
however
on
my
last
visit
I
decided
to
try
reiki
healing
on
her.
Once
I
started
the
healing,
she
stopped
chewing,
relaxed
her
face
and
looked
right
at
me
for
the
first
time!
By
the
end
of
our
session
I
noticed
she
was
still
making
direct
eye
contact
with
me
and
her
face
looked
so
relaxed
that
signs
of
her
learning
disability
were
no
longer
so
obvious.
At
this
very
moment
in
perfect
synchronicity
on
her
radio
played
Bruce
Springsteen
singing
‘human
touch’...
‘We
all
need
a
little
of
that
human
touch’,
‘feel
a
little
of
that
human
touch’.
Reiki
is
a
wonderful
way
to
connect
with
clients
who
don’t
have
verbal
communication
as
I
can
work
with
their
body-­‐feedback.
The
connection
I
made
with
this
client
and
the
wonderful
physical
change
I
witnessed
shall
stay
with
me
forever.
I
have
found
that
simply
by
giving
Reiki
without
judgement
of
what
needs
to
happen
and
how
that
my
clients
are
able
to
absorb
the
right
amount
of
energy
they
need
as
their
body
knows
subconsciously
where
the
healing
energy
needs
to
go.
I
believe
her
improved
deep
relaxed
state
was
a
result
of
the
reiki
she
received.
Perhaps
others
might
speculate
it
was
due
to
the
nature
of
touch
alone
but
one
thing’s
for
sure
her
improved
state
was
no
placebo
effect.
I
find
treating
people
with
various
learning
or
physical
disabilities
hugely
rewarding
as
the
results
speak
for
themselves.
As
a
Master
Reiki
practitioner
and
Reiki
teacher
I
work
on
reducing
imbalances
in
the
body
which
cause
poor
health,
anxiety
and
chronic
pain.
My
aim
is
always
to
leave
a
client
with
improved
health,
restored
energy
levels
and
a
smile
on
their
face.
