Philippians 2:1-11 So if there is any encouragement in
Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the
Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by
being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full
accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish
ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more
significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only
to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. -

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ
Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not
count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but
emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being
born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human
form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the
point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has
highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is
above every name, -

heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God

I. We all need the encouragement of Christ.
Encouragement comes:
A. Through the comforting power of love.
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort
from love,

B. Through our participation with the Holy Spirit.

uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but
Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on then, as God's chosen
ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts,
kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, -

E. Through our selflessness.
• 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint
against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has
forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and
shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In
his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell
securely. And this is the name by which he will be
called: The Lord is our righteousness.’

A. He is wise.
• 1 Corinthians 1:24 but to those who are called, both
Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the
wisdom of God.

because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus
my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all
things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may
gain Christ -

• 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my
own that comes from the law, but that which comes
through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that
depends on faith…

• Isaiah 11:5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
• Hebrews 3:5-6 Now Moses was faithful in all God's
house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to
be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God's house
as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast
our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

• Isaiah 53:9 And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death, although he had done
no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
• John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the
truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.

F. He is compassionate.
• Isaiah 29:18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of
a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of
the blind shall see.
• Isaiah 35:5-6 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the
lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute
sing for joy.

F. He is compassionate.
• Matthew 11:2-5 Now when John heard in prison about
the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3
and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or
shall we look for another?” -

hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the

• Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had
compassion for them, because they were harassed and
helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

• Isaiah 25:8-9 He will swallow up death forever; and the
Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the

day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him,
that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited
for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

• Matthew 1:21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his
name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

• Hosea 11:1-4 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and
out of Egypt I called my son. 2 The more they were
called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing

who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their
arms, but they did not know that I healed them. -

H. He is loving.
• 4 I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of
love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke
on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.
• John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when
Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this
world to the Father, having loved his own who were in
the world, he loved them to the end.

A. Through servanthood.

The Character of Christ
Encouragement comes through the comforting power of
love, through our participation with the Holy Spirit, through
our display of affection and sympathy, through our unity
and through our selflessness. But to do this we all need to
have the mind of Christ. He is wise, just, righteous, faithful,
truthful, compassionate, gallant and loving. We most
certainly will be an encouragement to others as we model
the example of Christ through our servanthood, humility,
and obedience all for the glory of God.
