2. ANCIENT ROUTES
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry launched the Global Business Forum Series (GBF) in 2012, under the patronage
of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler
of Dubai. The series was initiated as a platform to engage key leaders from various governments and multinational
corporations to support economic development and explore new investment opportunities in emerging markets across
the globe.
As part of the Global Business Forum series; the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has been identified as a
key market of great future potential. The first CIS Global Business Forum will explore the mutual business benefits that
emerge from the region’s changing economic synergies as markets reorient their trading patterns – while looking to
understand and manage the risks.
The concept of a new Silk Road, tying the economies of China and Europe, via Central Asia, Turkey and the Gulf, has taken
a battering as conflict and economic troubles divide the CIS region. But behind the headlines, the business momentum
is continuing and investments in infrastructure and logistics along the ancient trading routes are cutting costs and
creating new business realities.
Dubai has played a part in developing these connections, but the bigger opportunities for the Gulf region lie in reviving
a Northern Corridor linking Dubai via Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan to Moscow and the newly founded Eurasian Economic
Union – a group of markets with around 350 million people. At the same time, CIS countries can benefit from Dubai’s
business dynamism.
The Forum will involve prominent CIS stakeholders to engage in dialog at the highest level of implementation, advising
on key strategic directives related to the CIS’s economic outlook. Exclusively invitation-only; CIS GBF 2016 will bring
together a prominent delegate base including Heads of State, Heads of Government, Ministers and dignitaries, leading
CEOs operating globally, heads of private banks, sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms and a multitude of global
business leaders.
