• Sarata-Monteoru (briefly Monteoru in the past Sărăţii bottom) is a village in the municipality of
Merei Buzau, Muntenia, Romania. It is a seasonal seaside resort of local interest, and was first
known among locals for healing waters of salt springs.
• It is situated in the central-western county, Muntenia, Romania, 14km from the city of Buzau.
• Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the city and surrounding lands were bought by the
Greek Grigore Monteoru, who then took the name of the village as a surname; he successfully
exploited oil deposits, then used the earnings to finance investment in a tourist resort. In the
interwar period, the Monteoru was placed in a mine oil unique in Europe at the time.
• The resort has heyday until the Second World War, was destroyed by the communist regime and
confiscation of property. In the 1970s, the communist state tried to recover the resort arranged
the two hotels and a base treatment. They were completed after the fall of the regime and the
return to a market economy, other private initiatives in tourism.
It’s also host to a annual motorcycle contest called Enduro,
where people from all over the country come.
