After struggling like many other businesses over the past five plus years,
we feel that we have finally hit a
stride as the economy continues to
recover. 2013 was a good year for
Showalter, but of course we use the
word “good” in relative terms. And
while 2013 was a very quiet year in
terms of special events and other business generators in the Orlando area, 2014 looks to be just the opposite!
Showalter will hit the ground running this year with the Florida Aviation Business
Association’s Legislative Day in Tallahassee on January 9th. Jenny, Dan and Sandy
will represent the team at the NBAA Scheduler’s and Dispatchers conference in New
Orleans January 14th-17th. Dan and JB travel to Anaheim, CA February 24th-27th
to handle the helicopter displays for Heli-Expo 2014. In March, Orlando hosts the
second round of the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in March Madness. Also in March, Fifi, the
world’s only flying B-29 Superfortress has a parking space reserved on our ramp
from the 20th-23rd. Whew!
The late spring and summer look relatively quiet for events, but behind the scenes,
the staff at Showalter will be heavily into the planning phases of the 2014 NBAA
Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition taking place right here October 21st23rd. Many of you have “survived” NBAA on Showalter’s ramp during one or more
of our previous eight hosting gigs. For those of you that are new based customers,
please be sure to follow updates in this monthly newsletter, customer emails, on
Facebook (Showalter Flying Service), and Twitter (@ShowalterFlying). If you are not
receiving our customer emails or
electronic version of this newsletter, email jenny@showalter.com to
be added to our list.
As always, the team at Showalter is
so pleased to have served you in
2013, and we are excited to be
your choice for all your aviation
needs in Orlando!

Lunch with Carter-Happy Hangar Café
Tampa North Airport (X39) and the Green Swamp
By John Nadon

WingPoints Rewards

Today we launch for a new destination: the newly
opened Happy Hangar Café at Tampa North. We
have been looking for new restaurants within our
leash length for some time now, as you can imagine.
Making this trip special is the fact that today’s
airplane lacks GPS. We are equipped with only
VOR. How quaint. Also, neither of us has ever been to Tampa North. We’ll have
to find it the old-fashioned way! This involves tracking the ORL 227 radial
southwest to a point northeast-ish of Lakeland and southeast-ish of Zephyrhills,
flying west-ish for a while, and intercepting the LAL 305 radial. Okay, needle
centering, turn northwest. Wh? Hm? Uh? Duh! There it is! Wow, there it is!

If you are a based customer with
Showalter Flying Service and you are
not receiving WingPoints for your
fuel purchases with us, please contact Dawn in accounting at
dawn@showalter.com. WingPoints
for based customers are distributed
on a monthly basis. The only exception to this is our flying club members whose WingPoints are added
with each fuel sale. As always, don’t
forget to use your Phillips credit
card to earn double WingPoints with
each purchase!

Runway looks short, doesn’t it? Well, at least it’s narrow, so it looks in proportion. It’s pretty much a frank crosswind to either runway. Chart says it’s right
traffic to runway 14. On final we experience a bit of wind shear. A bit? Tumbling
downdraft in the lee of the trees! Pucker factor to 14! We touch down without
making the news and taxi to the southeast end. Whew! There, with a tiny sign,
is the Happy Hangar Café.
Carter, who usually gets the burger, orders a Reuben with the home-made potato chips. I get the Huge Hangar Breakfast: three eggs, bacon, sausage, ham,
grits, biscuit, gravy. Whoa.
While we wait, we notice a gothic chick preflighting, then soloing a Cherokee.
Black pants, black shirt, black boots, hair dyed black, black mascara, black eye
shadow. How cool! A substantial gothic chick!
Then we notice a Cirrus on right downwind for 14.
The pilot does a beautiful side slip and puts it down without even a squeak
from the tires. Whoa! This guy can fly!
Our meal arrives and the portions are enormous. If this new restaurant is to
survive they will have to get the food servings under control. We enjoy the
bounty while it’s there.
On the way home to ORL we dare the entire length of the Green Swamp, the
locus of our recent engine failure. It is a time for wistful and melancholy contemplation of our prejudices – and keen attention for open fields.

Lodi’s Lowdown
Lodi’s Lowdown took a break in December, but we are back!
The question for January is:
What milestone number of “likes” did Showalter Flying Service just surpass
on our Facebook page?
Oh, and while you are there checking, please “like” us on Facebook!
Please email your answers to jenny@showalter.com.
