4. WHAT IS DEFORESTATION?
Deforestation, clearance or cleaning is the
removal of a forest.
Examples of deforestation include conversion of
farm, ranches, or urban use.
5. WHAT IS DEFORESTATION?
According to UN conference in 1992,
deforestation is defined as
“Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and sub-humid
areas resulting from various factors including
climatic variation and human activities.”
6. Causes of Deforestation
1) Shifting cultivation:
Most of the clearing of forest is done for
agriculture purposes.
8. Causes
3) Mining and Dams:
Mining, Industrial development and Hydroelectric
power plant projects are also causes of
deforestation.
9. Causes
Deforestation also occurs due to
Overgrazing and conversion of forests to pasture
for domestic animals.
Expansion of agribusiness
Governmental sponsored programs that resettles
landless farmers on forested sites.
Other reasons include fire, pest etc.
10. Effects of Deforestation
• Soil Erosion.
• Expansion of Deserts.
• Decrease in Rainfall.
• Loss of Fertile Land.
• Effect on Climate.
• Economic Losses.
• Loss of Bio-diversity.
• Loss of Medical Plants
11. Control of Deforestation
Reforestation.
Legislation.
Commercial Forest Plantations.
Incentive to corporate.
Water Management.
12. Conclusion
If we don’t put an end to
deforestation, all of Earth’s
forests will disappear within the
next 100 years.
