Madison Square Garden Transformation
The transformation of Madison Square Garden’s (MSG) 985,000 s.f. footprint features an
expanded 7th Avenue entrance, new arena seating, luxury suites, dressing rooms and numerous
retail and dining concessions. Designed by BBB Architects, project highlights include the two
striking Chase Sky Bridges. High above the arena, each suspension bridge spans 233 feet long
and 22 feet wide, providing event-goers with a bird’s eye view of the action.
An inherent challenge to the rehabilitation of an iconic venue such as MSG is the full schedule of
sporting and entertainment events. Turner developed a multi-year construction plan that allowed
for major installations to occur during three “dark summers,” and enabled the team to work
continuously through the active periods. In addition, Turner worked with numerous city agencies
to develop a comprehensive site safety plan in order to mitigate the logistical challenges of MSG
sitting atop Penn Station, one of the world’s busiest transit hubs. To ensure the seamless progress
of the project, Turner’s team created e-manager, a cloud-based construction software, that allows
for efficient tracking of the change order process, and monitoring of subcontractor work flow.
The project, which broke ground on June 1st, 2010, was completed on schedule in October, 2014
without a single hitch in the Garden’s roster of events.
