HOW DO I REPORT A BIAS-RELATED INCIDENT?
> Why report a bias-related
incident?
While bias-related incidents sometimes target specific
individuals, they often violate an entire group or commu-
nity. Le Moyne College is committed to being an inclu-
sive community; therefore any act that may pose a threat
to our community is taken seriously. When a bias-related
incident does target specific individuals because of his
or her race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or
other protected characteristic, even those individuals not
directly targeted may feel at risk. Bias-related incidents
harm our community and can create a hostile living and
learning environments.
> What is a bias-related incident?
The College defines a bias-related incident as behavior
that constitutes an expression of hostility against the
person or property of another because of the targeted
person’s race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity,
national origin, gender, age or disability.
Bias-related incidents include, but are not limited to,
non-threatening name calling and using degrading
language or slurs that are directed toward at a person
because of his or her membership or perceived member-
ship in protected class in a manner that creates a hostile
environment for an individual.
> What happens after I submit
a report?
Once the report is filed through the Bias Reporting Sys-
tem, the chair of the BRI team will review the report and,
with the assistance of the BRI team members, determine
the best course of action. A meeting will be held with the
individual who filed the report to review his or her options
and available resources. He or she will also be given an
overview of the follow-up or investigation into the report.
> How is confidentiality kept
during this process?
Once an official report has been filed, the College will
endeavor to respect the wishes of the individual who
brought forward a concern about a bias-related incident.
However, individuals should understand that Le Moyne
may have ethical and legal obligations to investigate, at-
tempt to resolve, or adjudicate such incidents that come
to its attention. Therefore, depending on the circumstanc-
es, it may not always be possible that conversations with
the BRI team will be kept in confidence.
