  • Introduction Talk about a few Safety Grants but primarily the news REMS grant. The unfortunate reality is, however, that at some point many school districts in this country will be touched either directly or indirectly by an emergency or crisis of some kind. The creation and maintenance of a safe school environment is an issue of national concern. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and tornadoes, can strike; the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita reinforce the need for schools and communities to plan for natural crises and emergencies, In addition, recent events and science demonstrate that schools and communities also need to take chemical/biological hazards, as well as potential public health emergencies, into account in their planning process. GAS LINE EXPLOSIONS, While studies show that schools are the safest places for children to be during the morning and afternoon hours, schools must take steps to continually review and enhance their level of preparedness for potential emergencies. That’s what the grants are all about. to implement all aspects of emergency management, including conducting vulnerability assessments, developing and updating written emergency management procedures, training staff, and conducting drills and exercises. The REMS grant competition is designed to provide resources to school districts to increase local capacity and to institute a sustainable emergency management program LET’s TAKE A LOOK

Safe Schools & Healthy Students Initiative <ul><ul><li>Purpose & absolute project priority: The LEA’s application must propose to implement an integrated, comprehensive community-wide plan designed to create safe, respectful, and drug-free school environments and to promote prosocial skills and healthy childhood development. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Deadline: March 4, 2009 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Eligibility : A competitive preference will be given to applications from LEAs that have not yet received a grant under this program as an applicant or as a member of a consortium. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Partnership w/LEA, local juvenile justice agency, local law enforcement agency, & local public mental health authority </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Range of awards : $750,000 - $2,500,000 each year for four years. SS/SH Initiative Successful Projects <ul><ul><li>Through a partnership with a local university, Canton, OH students and the Canton SS/HS initiative implemented a social marketing campaign to change the way the community views the two schools and the students who attend them. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Harrisburg, PA SS/HS initiative’s work to incorporate social and emotional learning into schools began by training all district teachers, kindergarten through fifth grade, in the PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) curriculum. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Through regular lessons, students learn self-control, problem-solving, and other skills designed to prevent violent or disruptive behavior. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Durant, OK SS/HS initiative implemented two important, evidence-based classroom programs to help the students </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Second Step teaches children problem-solving skills, impulse control, and anger management.
