Executive Management Of Non-Profit Organisations
1. Introduction and objectives
For almost a decade before joining Lattitude Global Volunteering I worked as a highly qualified
Engineer at a multinational Steelmaking Company. As a result of my involvement in teams
responsible for feasibility studies for multi million pound Energy Strategy projects, I gained a set
of useful team and managerial skills.
I then went through a life changing volunteering experience in Cambodia, which made me take
the decision to leave my Engineering career in pursue of an opportunity in the non-profit
volunteering sector. After all, I thought that my work experience mixed with a high dose of
altruism, commitment and strong personal motivation would be enough to succeed in this sector.
But not quite… Upon joining Lattitude Global Volunteering I realized that yes, some of my
previously gained skills were of great help, specifically those related to organizational and
analytical thinking. But as my responsibilities quickly grew, so did the feeling that there were
areas where I lacked some specific training that would allow me to better perform my job and
grow professionally within Lattitude. Especially since becoming Operations Manager I have been
faced with a variety of challenges that are new to me, situations when as a charity we are
constantly trying to optimise efficiency in the application of limited resources, and when the
means provided by the volunteers and the authorities require the most transparent and careful
management.
This gap in my training was already identified in an early appraisal as a long term objective, and
brought up again during my last appraisal (April 13) - but this time as something that needed to
be addressed in the more immediate term.

Hence to meet this need to gain a higher level of preparedness in order to increase efficiency and
effectiveness in rendering services to Lattitude, I have joined a master modular programme
jointly organised by the Spanish Open University (UNED - National Distance Education University)
and the Fundación Acción Contra el Hambre (Action Against Hunger Foundation).
After the experience of thirteen editions of the master, a new, completely remodelled
programme is provided, adapted to the demands and challenges faced by today's Non-Profit
Organisations. One of the UNED’s most characteristic features is the ability to offer training based
on great flexibility, which allows me to access a training set (modules) tailored to the needs of a
charity such as Lattitude.
The collaboration between the UNED and Action Against Hunger simultaneously ensures
academic rigour and experience in the third sector, combining theory with practice.

Qualifications
Depending on the numbers of credits successfully completed I may obtain the qualifications listed
below.
• Diploma of Expertise (specific qualification granted by UNED) – when I complete four modules
(20 ECTS credits) obtaining a PASS grade.
• Specialist Diploma (specific qualification granted by UNED) – when I complete eight modules
(40 ECTS credits) obtaining a PASS grade.
• Master's Degree (specific qualification granted by UNED) if over a minimum of two academic
years I obtain a PASS grade in thirteen modules (65 ECTS credits). To obtain this degree, it will be
essential to enrol in the Master Thesis Project, the implementation of which will be duly tutored.
The modules will be freely chosen by me until the credits required for each degree are completed.
In all three cases, it is also necessary for me to attend at least one workshop per academic year.
The workshops are held within classroom training and consist of the discussion and resolution of
practical cases related to specific matters to be provided by the assigned teacher. In can choose
the workshop I want to attend among those offered for each classroom session.
3. Methodology and activities
The methodology of distance education implies that, for appropriate learning and study, I must
have available adequate documentation and support by an expert teaching staff. I will therefore
be provided with specific study materials and an Educational Guide for guidance in my progress.
I will further be offered permanent telematic tutoring and other ways of communication that will
be specified later.
The methodology of the Programme is characterised by:
• Remote modular programme through an e- Learning platform
• On-line and (optional) paper materials
• Inclusion of MOOC courses (massive on-line open courses) or audiovisual support materials.
o Virtual Learning Community
o On-line tutorials
o Case study resolution
o Participation in discussion forums
o Access to novelties and news in the relevant fields
6. Page 6 of 8
• Classroom sessions
o Presentation of the programme
o Term exams
o One practical workshop per academic year (coinciding with term exams)
• Personalised itinerary and learning rate depending on the time available, interest and
dedication.
• Continuous assessment
• Up-to-date materials as a result of a thorough analysis of the needs and demands of human
resources in the sector, the current training offer, and the challenges and trends of Social
Action Organizations in Spain and Europe.
4. Duration and dedication
The course is divided into two terms, from January to May and from May to September.
The classroom sessions enable direct teacher/student contact, effort socialisation through the
contact with other students, and discussion and exchange of experiences and views.
For this reason, different classroom sessions are scheduled throughout the year:
• Classroom session with exams for first term modules (end of May)
• Classroom session with exams for second term modules (end of September)
• Special classroom session for recovery of failed module examinations of both terms
(November).
The sessions will take place in Madrid and attendance in order to take classroom exams is
mandatory.
The dates of the classroom sessions which will normally fall on Saturday will be communicated
at the beginning of the course.
5. Teaching materials following up the course
For the preparation of the contents the virtual platform will offer:
1. General Guide and Teaching Guide for each module.
2. An MOOC course or audiovisual support materials for each of the modules.
7. Page 7 of 8
3. Module syllabus. Each module is divided into topics as follows:
• Schematic index of the topic
• Initial questions to which there will be answers (or sufficient information to elaborate
an answer) along the different sections.
• Introduction to the topic subject, outlining the fundamental ideas and relating them to
the general content of the module.
• Final summary of the basic contents explained in the relevant topic.
• List of basic concepts.
• Annotated specialised bibliography, as a useful reference for further study.
4. Glossary of basic concepts used in different sections.
5. Self-assessment exercises: Questions that will test the understanding of the fundamental
syllabus contents and the basic concepts and relationships.
6. Supplementary material update.
7. Motivating questions and issues open to debate, designed to encourage personal reflection on
the aspects addressed.
8. Case Studies.
9. Forums for the exchange of views and problems among students.
6. Student Support Service
Monitoring of the course completion will be conducted through the virtual platform of the
course, which ensures permanent contact with the professors and other students.
7. Evaluation and Qualification Criteria
Assimilation of the self-assessment exercises is the best guarantee of success in passing each
module. My personal effort will be subject to continuous assessment based on participation in
the virtual classroom, mentoring, resolution of case studies and participation in discussion
forums. The exams have the same structure as the self-assessment exercises and will be based
8. Page 8 of 8
on similar issues and concepts. Each module will be graded as PASS or FAIL, together with a
numerical score.
If for any reason I could not make it on the exam day or fail any of the courses, I will be able to
benefit from an extraordinary recovery exam to be held in November.
The final evaluation depends on overcoming the different sections:
- Resolution of a case study per module
- Active participation in the discussion forums in the virtual classroom
- Classroom exam (see section 4)
- Participation (attendance in person) in one workshop in Madrid per academic year at any of the
dates referred to in section 4.
