Big boost for Panmure commuters
Panmure’snew transportinterchange will make lifealoteasierforcommuters withthe walkingtime
between busesandtrainsnow takinglessthanaminute.
The new busandtrain stationhasbeenopenedtodaybyMayorLenBrownandAssociate Transport
Minister,Michael Woodhouse.
“Thiswill be the gatewaytoAuckland’snewesthighfrequencybuswayandisasignificantstep
towardsbettertransportconnectionsforAuckland’seasternsuburbs,”saysMrBrown.
“Our newfast,efficientelectrictrainsstartscheduledserviceswithinthenextfew months andIcan’t
waitto be onthe firstservice toPanmure inAugust.
“AndI know everybodyinthe eastiswaitingforthe new buswaywithreal anticipation.They’ve been
waitingforbetterpublictransportlinkswiththe restof Aucklandforwaytoolong.”
The $17.5 millioninterchange allowseasyanddirecttransfersbetweenrail andbus,benefitingthose
livingandworkinginthe areaas well asthose whotravel throughPanmure as part of theirdaily
commute.
Associate Ministerof Transport,HonMichael Woodhouse saysthe openingof the new Panmure
Stationisan excitingmilestoneforthe firstphase of AMETI andbuildsonextensive Governmentand
AucklandCouncil investmentinthe rail network.
“The GovernmentiscommittedtoongoingimprovementstoAuckland’stransportnetwork,and
addressingissuesinthe AMETIareais a keyfocus.”
The interchange ispart of the AucklandManukauEastern TransportInitiative (AMETI) andits
completionmarksthe firststage of the SoutheasternBuswaybetweenPanmure,Pakurangaand
Botany.The nextstage will see the creationof the buswaylanesalongLagoonDrive andPakuranga
Road to a newbusstationat Pakurangatown centre.
The buswaywill offerpassengers fasterandmore reliable traveltimesby freeingbusesfromtraffic
congestion.Itwill betterconnectpeopleinthe areato trainsto the city andthe south.
AucklandTransport'sChief Executive DrDavidWarburtonsaysthe new interchange will becomean
importanttransporthubfor Aucklandandisa significantsteptowardsimprovingAuckland'spublic
transportsystem.
“Thisis a good example of the progresswe’remakingintermsof connectivityandfastertravel
times”saysDr Warburton. “The interchange layoutisdesignedforeasy transfers whichisalso
2. enhancedbythe newAT HOPcard allowingpeople totravel seamlesslybetweenpublictransport
modesandoperators.”
The NZ Transport Agencyisinvesting$152m in the total AMETI investment to 2015 of $290m, and as
a co-funderof the projectitsays the Panmure TransportInterchange isan example of its strategy to
give people with more travel choices.
“A great facility like this is one part of a much bigger transport picture for Auckland,” says the
Transport Agency’s Regional Manager for Planning and Investment, Peter Casey. “Encouraging
greater use of public transport – and other facilities for those who walk and cycle – provides more
travel options and helps ease congestion on our busy motorways and roads so that journeys for
people and freight become safer and more reliable.
Mr Caseysaysthe Prime MinisterlastyearidentifiedAMETIaspart of the Government’sprogramme
of transport projects to be accelerated in Auckland.
“The Transport Agency invests hundreds of millions of transport dollars in Auckland and this new
interchange and the AMETI project as a whole is a great example of where we team up to work co-
operatively and successfully with Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to grow infrastructure
that is a key to the city’s growth. “
Panmure iscurrentlyone of the busiestrail stationsinthe regionwithapproximately 1700
passengersperday.Ithas grownrapidlysince 2003 whenit wasusedby lessthan100 passengers
perday.
Featuresinclude anew central pedestrianplazalinkingbothsidesof the rail tracks, twolifts,
escalatorstoboth platformsandfoursetsof stairsat the mainaccess points.Ticketmachineshave
beeninstalledonbothplatformswithastaffed ticketoffice onthe groundfloor.
AMETI is AucklandTransport’slargestconstructionprojectwhich oncompletionwill seethe delivery
of the firstmajorinfrastructure inthe areafora numberof years.This majorprojectwill see an
integratedapproachtoimprovingtransport- withworkonroads, publictransport, walkingand
cyclinginfrastructure.
The nextstage of the projectwill unlockfurtherbenefitsfortransportinthe areaonce the Panmure
roundaboutisremovedandabusway fromPanmure toPakurangatowncentre isbuilt.
