The document outlines six key roles that modern journalists should serve: the ethical role by raising standards of ethics and guidance; the guide/filter role by helping audiences navigate important news; the understanding and context role by providing context and explanation of news; the conversation leader role by starting and guiding discussions; the aggregator role by gathering and making community data accessible; and the straight news role by still uncovering and reporting important news.
One Year of the Modi Government: A Compilation of CritiquesAICC_2015
The document provides critiques of Narendra Modi's first year as Prime Minister of India from various commentators and publications. It contains 37 articles that are generally critical of Modi's performance. Some of the main critiques included are:
- Modi failed to deliver on many of his major promises like bringing back black money and depositing Rs. 15 lakh in every citizen's account.
- Economic reforms have been incremental rather than bold or radical as promised. Growth, jobs, exports, and industrial production are lower than expected.
- Agriculture is in distress with falling growth and increasing farmer suicides. Social sectors like health and education faced budget cuts.
- Relations with neighbors like Pakistan and China have
The document discusses media bias and whether it truly exists. It argues that while both liberals and conservatives claim bias in the media, the bias may be more of a myth perpetuated by political leaders to convince their followers. It aims to analyze cable news and talk shows to determine if provable bias exists or if the perception of bias depends on one's political viewpoint. It also discusses how context and a communicator's situation can influence the understanding and perception of messages.
The New Media and Democracy, Sir Peter Luff MP.Matt Gourd
Sir Peter Luff MP spoke about how his experience in public relations consulting proved invaluable in his 23 years as a Member of Parliament. He discussed an example from 1994 where he successfully campaigned against sexually explicit content in magazines aimed at young girls by applying communication strategies he had used as a PR consultant. These included focusing on a clear message, repeating the message until people were tired of hearing it, targeting influential national media, and using the media to both attack an issue and help promote his campaign. He argued that experience in public relations gives important skills for both challenging status quos and gaining attention for clients and causes, in service of democracy.

His one-man campaign resulted in publishers capitulating and improving the magazines' standards. He argued that PR professionals can play an important role in challenging the status quo and gaining attention for causes and that, contrary to some views, those with PR backgrounds can serve democracy effectively.

3. The document then examines the concept of a personal community and identifies three defining properties - numbers, constancy, and involvement. It provides examples to illustrate these different properties.
Role of media in exposing anti development elements pptSanjayKalekar4
Media plays an important role in exposing corruption and anti-development practices through investigative journalism and sting operations. It functions as a public watchdog by scrutinizing the government, exposing misconduct, and forcing transparency. Media also alarms the public about scandals, stimulates policy change, and can help lower corruption levels by providing information and accountability. It empowers citizens to fight corruption and encourages changing cultures that enable inclusive growth and strong democracies with engaged citizens.
Media plays an important role in modern democracy by allowing free expression and an informed public. Under the First Amendment, citizens have freedom of speech and press across printed and digital media. The media helps form public opinions by providing information on current events and issues from diverse sources. However, media bias can also distort information and influence views through selective reporting or speculative coverage driven by commercial interests rather than accuracy.

Factual writing should not contain bias. Bias undermines the goal of factual writing, which is to inform readers with accurate information and allow them to form their own opinions. Examples are given of media outlets like the BBC and The Independent demonstrating bias through omission of important facts, skewed story selection, or slanted wording of headlines. This misleads readers rather than giving a balanced presentation of all sides of an issue. Factual writing works best when it presents information and arguments objectively, without being influenced by a writer's personal views, so readers can make up their own minds based on all the facts.
The document discusses whether factual writing should contain bias. It argues that factual writing is meant to inform readers without opinion so they can form their own views based on facts. Bias undermines this goal by selectively presenting information that supports one side over others. Examples are given of media outlets like the BBC and The Independent omitting important details or angles in their coverage of events like the Scottish independence referendum and a terrorist attack in Jerusalem in ways that appeared to show bias. The document concludes that factual writing should not contain bias as the media's role is to fully and fairly inform the public without manipulation.

1. Definition:
A person or media entity that misleadingly tailors news to fit a particular partisan,
financial or business agenda.
Blend of press + prostitute. The comparison comes from the notion that they sell
themselves for money.
2. IDEAL ROLE OF MEDIA AND PRESS
• To convey unadulterated news to the public.
• To bridge a connection between common masses and the incidents going on all
over the world.
• Bring attention of government to the public demands.
• Never give one’s own opinion on any incident.
• Act as a source of cultural exchange for people living in different parts of the
country.
• Criticize the government in a unbiased way and strengthen the concept of a true
democracy.
3. WHAT OUR MEDIA ACTUALLY DOES?
For eg. There are 5 person A,B,C,D,E conveying a news. A=Eye witness ; E=reporter.
A→B: I saw him rebuking his servant as he came late everyday.
B→C: I saw him thrashing his servant as he came late.
C→D:I saw him thrashing his servant who I think is a muslim.
D→E: I saw him beating his muslim servant as he demanded a hike in salary.
E reporting: A muslim man was severly beaten by his hindu landlord, while the police and
authorities have nothing to say about the matter. Are minority groups safe in our
country?
In this way ‘Yellow Journalism’ has taken over media and the press.
Yellow journalism, or the yellow press, is a type of journalism that presents little or no
legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more
news.
4. WHY MEDIA HAS BECOME BIASED?
• Media is a great tool of reaching out to common people throughout the
country with the help of Television and Newspaper.
• This tool is used as a weapon by people in power.
• Growing competition in news channel industry leads to methods of attracting
attention.
• Reporters facing lack of real stories to work on.
• TRP has become a revenue source from advertisement agencies.
• In a democratic government has very little control over authenticity of the news
shown to public.
5. OUR RESPONSIBILITY
• Be alert
• Stop accepting the statement :”Seeing is believing”.
• Verify facts that we see and use logic to justify them.
• Question whatever one find unjust.
• Never trust an information from one source , always cross check it.
• Prevent rumour from spreading like wildfire.
• Last but not the least is be truthful.
