PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
July 1993 – March 1999 Junior and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Organic
Chemistry, IACS, Jadavpur, Calcutta, India.
Research:  A) Syntheses and characterization of vinyl naphthalene analogues of chalcones.
B) Photoreactions of naphthaleneanalogues of chalcone in presence of transition metals.
Copper(II)-mediated photocyclization of methoxynaphthyl analogues of chalcone to
naphthofurans via an electron transfer process is reported. Examples of photoinduced electron
transfer (PET) mediated cyclization of methoxynaphthyl analogues of chalcone using electron
acceptors has been reported.
C) Photochemical intramolecular cyclization routes to indole derivatives. The 2-aroylindole
derivatives are easily prepared from these derivatives in a tandem reaction sequence in moderate
yields. Photolytic process is found to be much more facile than the thermal process in this
transformation.

Curriculum vitae Samiran kar, Ph.D.
Designed and synthesized :
o α-oxo aldehyde-supported silicas by sol-gel procedure, semicarbazide- or
glyoxylyl functionalized polydisperse silica particles and their use for the
preparation of hybrid polypeptide-silica materials.
o phosphonic acid possessing a protected COCHO group by using the Heck
reaction
The peptides were attached to the surface of functionalized silicas by site-specific α-oxo
hydrazone or semicarbazone ligation. The reaction of semicarbazide silicas with a model
glyoxylyl peptide was found to be very efficient under stoichiometric conditions and led to
ligation yields of about 90%. The use of glyoxylyl silicas and of hydrazinoacetyl peptides led to
lower yields. After grafting of the phosphonic acid on metal oxides, the cleavage of the dithiane
group was successful. The reactivity of the supported-COCHO group was examined by using
model reaction with hydroxylamine and hydrazine derivatives.

Curriculum vitae Samiran kar, Ph.D. Celine, JOLY Pascal, GRAS-MASSE Helene, MELNYK Oleg, ALONSO Bruno, MASSIOT Dominique, European Congress on Advanced Materials and Processes, 1-5 September 2003, Lausanne, Switzerland. 35) Posters Photo induced Electron Transfer (PET) Reactions of Vinyl naphthalene, S. Kar and S. Lahiri, I. A. C. S., Jadavpur, Kolkata, India, 1998. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE July 1993 – March 1999 Junior and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Organic Chemistry, IACS, Jadavpur, Calcutta, India. Research:  A) Syntheses and characterization of vinyl naphthalene analogues of chalcones. B) Photoreactions of naphthaleneanalogues of chalcone in presence of transition metals. Copper(II)-mediated photocyclization of methoxynaphthyl analogues of chalcone to naphthofurans via an electron transfer process is reported. Examples of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mediated cyclization of methoxynaphthyl analogues of chalcone using electron acceptors has been reported. C) Photochemical intramolecular cyclization routes to indole derivatives. The 2-aroylindole derivatives are easily prepared from these derivatives in a tandem reaction sequence in moderate yields. Photolytic process is found to be much more facile than the thermal process in this transformation. Title of the Thesis: "Chalcone Analogs: Syntheses And Their Photo reactivity''. • 7. Curriculum vitae Samiran kar, Ph.D. Designed and synthesized : o α-oxo aldehyde-supported silicas by sol-gel procedure, semicarbazide- or glyoxylyl functionalized polydisperse silica particles and their use for the preparation of hybrid polypeptide-silica materials. o phosphonic acid possessing a protected COCHO group by using the Heck reaction The peptides were attached to the surface of functionalized silicas by site-specific α-oxo hydrazone or semicarbazone ligation. The reaction of semicarbazide silicas with a model glyoxylyl peptide was found to be very efficient under stoichiometric conditions and led to ligation yields of about 90%. The use of glyoxylyl silicas and of hydrazinoacetyl peptides led to lower yields. After grafting of the phosphonic acid on metal oxides, the cleavage of the dithiane group was successful. The reactivity of the supported-COCHO group was examined by using model reaction with hydroxylamine and hydrazine derivatives. Industry: 1.
