2. “On Monday night ... I saw the colonists and heard them use the
most cruel threats against the troops. The ​mob​of colonists
increased and were striking their clubs and calling out, 'come on
you rascals, you bloody backs, you lobster ​scoundrels​, fire if you
dare, fire and be damned. One of the soldiers was hit with a stick,
and instantly fired, and [while] asking him why he fired without
