A Day In A Life
A
s a travel writer based
in Southeast Asia, I get
to review numerous
spas and wellness
centres (well, someone has to do
it) but especially in Bali, one of the
world’s leading spa destinations,
combining ancient wellness
and healing traditions, Hindu
spirituality and naturally beautiful
surrounds. Bali’s spas are best
known for their pampering
massages, floral baths, tropical
fruit wraps and more, but with
the growing global trend for de-
stress, rejuvenation and “finding
oneself,” this Island of the Gods
embraces alternative therapies –
home-grown and global, old and
new – that you may not expect,
but glad you did.
Bali’s spas have yet to
introduce flotation tanks, but
perhaps there is no need. Along
Bali’s volcanic north-east
coastline and far from the crowds,
Spa Village Resort Tembok offers
a holistic retreat, where custom-
made detox and rejuvenation
programmes integrate age-old
spa remedies, wellness and
cultural activities and health-
giving cuisine. This includes
night-time Starlight Gazing
sessions: floating on an inflatable
mattress on the beachfront
pool, plugged-in to an iPod
pumped with N.A.S.A-inspired
soundtrack and gazing up at inky
black, clear skies studded with
a galaxy of stars. A powerfully
transformational experience, the
sense of weightlessness and ultra-
meditative music induces the body
into deep relaxation and frees up
the mind to focus inward. Thus
when I am pulled back to poolside
after thirty minutes, I almost
throw a tantrum (unravelling all
my hard-won inner peace) as I’m
not ready for reality – yet.
For more water-based therapy,
but far from lying down on the job,
I head to Jimbaran Bay’s AYANA
Resort. Here, amidst sprawling
cliff-top gardens, Thermes Marins
Spa boasts one of the world’s
largest Aquatonic® Seawater
Therapy Pools, containing 700
million litres of water directly
supplied from the underlying
Indian Ocean, heated to body
temperature. In a two-hour
Thalassotherapy session, I am
guided through a watery labyrinth
of 12 hydro-massage stations,
incorporating over 60 individual
therapeutic jet streams, micro-
bubbles, currents, geysers, water
massage zones and multi-level
water jets – some so strong, I
fear they may catapult me off to
Java – toning and conditioning
specific body parts through
different intensity and postures.
This ranges from a challenging
counter-current walking zone to
blissful bubble baths appreciating
the bay views and, if booked late
afternoon, sunsets. Therapeutic
and natural curative pay-offs
include increased blood circulation
and absorption of vital trace
minerals, relief of skin ailments
and muscle pain plus a deeply
restorative sleep – don’t plan any
partying that night.
At Hotel Tugu Bali, an
exquisite museum- hotel fronting
Canggu Beach, atmospheric
Waroeng Djamoe Spa offers
centuries-old Javanese and
Balinese authentic therapies and
rituals combining spirituality and
healing. The hotel’s signature
‘’Purnama (Full Moon) and Tilem
(New Moon) Massage” celebrates
these sacred moon days, when
Hindus honour ancestral Gods
with offerings and purification
ceremonies. More a spiritual
experience – penetrating the
soul, not just tired muscles – this
massage revolves around the
moon’s magic and energy, and on
full moon nights, good fortune
emitting from its rays.
Even my female therapist
comes blessed with special
powers, conducting personal full
moon blessing ceremonies, first
on the beach at sunset, then at
a garden shrine concluding this
75-minute mysterious ritual.
Within a beachside thatched
pavilion, semi-open to sea
breezes, the massage commences
with long, gentle strokes inspired
by the moon’s soft caresses and
crashing waves combined with
richly aromatic oils. Rhythmic
hand movements become
increasingly bolder – at times
bearing almost vice-like strength
– replaced with a crescendo of
strong, rotating circles made
with forearms and knuckles
reflecting the full moon’s circular
movements and energy, then
calming down to softening long
strokes. I then “recover” in
a God-sized bath strewn with
Frangipani flowers under the
silvery glow of a full moon high
above the coconut palms – which
locals believe washes away
impurities.
If it is healing you
seek, head to the hills
and Ubud, the island’s
cultural
FRANGIPANI
Ubiquitous across Bali
and an iconic flower,
Frangipanis are not
only offered in Hindu
ceremonies, but
widely utilised in spas
as massage essential
oils and hydrating
lotions.
LEMONGRASS
This aromatic culinary
spice doubles as
an essential oil
for burning and
massages and
infusion of goodness
in jugs of water. It
is also used as a
traditional healing
therapy such as a
herbal compress .
COCONUTS
An iconic Asian plant,
coconuts contain
high levels of natural
fats and oil, providing
rich hydration and
nourishment to the
skin, natural minerals
and proteins aiding
growth and repair
plus anti-aging,
antioxidant, antiseptic
and healing
properties..

and spiritual heartland; for
centuries it has been an
epicentre of healers and holistic
practitioners administering their
indigenous energy, body and
mind work. Even ultra-refined
Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve,
offers bespoke holistic wellness
and lifestyle programmes aided
by an impressive pool of local
healers. These include a celebrity-
favourite Shaman and grandson of
the last King of Ubud holding court
at his royal compound and a gifted
blind reflexologist, who after
body scanning, uses her intuitive
awareness for personalised healing
massages and energy channelling.
It is however at Fivelements
(Puri Ahimsa), a 5-Star-meets-
rustic healing retreat for body,
mind and spirit, that I encounter
the more spiritual side of this
world – or “the other side.” Their
Healing Rituals come administered
by authentic native healers using
ancient wisdoms passed down
direct Balian lineage, engaging
the help of higher divine sources
and following indigenous parallel
conscious and psychic worlds
principals for meditation, deep
bodywork and Prana energy.
Healing Energy options offer
mind-blowing experiences and
spiritual spring-cleansing, none
more so than heavy duty Panca
Mahabhuta (Five Elements). In a
riverside bamboo hut, following
prayers and meditation, my
Shaman-style healer balances
my body’s earth, water, fire, air
and ether elements, channelling
a connection with the universe’s
five elements and uniting them
to create an almighty harmony.
Phew. Passing his hands over
me, he locates and clears out
unhealthy energy from emotional
and mental burdens that have
accumulated. An uplifting
experience, literally, and I leave
spiritually re-awakened and
officially “balanced” with my
Chakras opened up.
Last thing I expected to do
was hang upside-down in the
rainforest, but that’s exactly what
happened at Four Seasons Resort
Bali at Sayan and their spiritually
and wellness-inclined Sacred
River Spa – hosting Bali’s first-
ever AntiGravity® Yoga sessions, a
groundbreaking ‘flying’ technique,
created in New York by a former
gymnast- dancer. I attend a
daily morning class at their Yoga
Bale secluded amongst jungle
foliage and rice fields, attempting
aerial-style yoga in bespoke
hammocks designed for maximum
body support and enhanced
and inverted postures. These
therapeutic head-to-toe workouts
(relieving stress and encouraging
healthy blood circulation) are
probably the most productive
“hanging around” there is. Sacred
River also celebrates the full moon
with once-monthly yoga sessions
held on their open-air river deck,
where, inspired by the full moon’s
uplifting energy and nocturnal
sounds, yogis honour “the
divine feminine side” with moon
salutations – believed to cool down
fiery impulses and hot emotions.
After all this, I end up craving
spirits of another kind. Alongside
Petitenget Beach at hip and
playful, W Retreat & Spa Bali-
Seminyak, AWAY® Spa bucks
traditional spa trends: covering a
whopping 1,500-square metres,
its super-slick, all-white interiors
resemble a vast spaceship.
Furthermore, AWAY stays
open 24/7 and provides a Detox
Chamber wired with pure oxygen
masks and fully-stocked CHILL
“I leave spiritually re-awakened and
officially ‘balanced’, with my Chakras
