4. Introduction :
Dowry is a social evil in India. We daily read in newspapers and watch
in T.V. about dowry deaths.
Dowry spoils all pleasures of married life . It has taken a fearful form.

5. What is “DOWRY SYSTEM”?
Dowry means gift by the girl’s parents at the time of marriage . This is
the symbol of love and respect.
It is the help of the girl so that she may set up her home. But with the
passage of time , the sense of dowry has changed . It has now became
a social evil.
Dowries may be in the form of:
Goods (clothing/jewellery).
Assets (livestock, land/cash).

6. Nature of Dowry Problem:
• Dowry death’s numbers in the hundreds each year. Indian
government has introduced so any laws to stop dowry system, yet the
people have not changed.
• Only 18% of prosecutions involving dowry killings result in
convictions. Even highly educated people are also running behind
dowry.

7. Causes of dowry:
• Poverty .
• Illiteracy.
• Narrow mentality behind dowry system.
• Negative attitude towards the women .
• Lack of women education.
• Ignorance of anti dowry laws.

8. Factors that favours evil of dowry:
• Religion and traditions.
• Gender differentiation .
• Educational status.
• Urban living.
Legislation for evil’s of dowry:
Following acts of dowry prohibitions:
>1961 Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 304B & 498B a dowry and bridal
gifts restriction rule.

9. • 1976 Dowry Prohibition (Maintenance of presents to the bride and
bridegroom) rules.
• “SAY NO TO DOWRY” – WHERE WOMEN ARE HONOURED THERE
GOD’S ARE PLEASED;
BUT WHERE THEY ARE NOT HONOURED NO SACRED RITE YEILDS
REWARDS.

10. CONCLUSION.
• People should not attend such marriages. Girls should refuse to marry
boy’s who ask for dowry.
• Dowry act should be changed, accepting dowry should be made a
non-bailealbe crime.
• Dowry should be mandatory to SARPANCH, TALATHI ,NGO’s etc..to
report such cases to police for actions.
• Police on their own should file complaints against dowry takers.
