4. Introduction
Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that is carried out to remove the
uterus/womb.Depending on the disease and age of patient, a
Gynaecologist will decide to go for partial/ total hysterectomy or
Hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy.
A hysterectomy surgery is commonly suggested by doctors when other
treatment options are not available or have been unsuccessful.
5. Types of Hysterectomy
● Total hysterectomy – As the name suggests, the womb and
cervix are removed.
● Subtotal hysterectomy – The main body of the womb is
removed, leaving the cervix intact.
● Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy –
The womb, cervix are removed along with the fallopian tubes
and ovaries.
● Radical hysterectomy – The womb and surrounding tissues
are removed, including the fallopian tubes, part of the vagina,
ovaries, lymph glands and fatty tissue.
6. Why Doctors Advice a Hysterectomy?
There are various reasons, and sometimes multiple reasons, to have the
uterus removed. A hysterectomy surgery is unavoidable if the patient is
diagnosed with one or more of the following conditions:
● Uterine fibroids or leiomyomas: Unusual heavy bleeding, chronic
pain and other problems.
● Uterine prolapse: The uterus lowering from its normal position into
the vaginal canal.
● Endometriosis: Uterine tissues growing outside the uterus (in the
ovaries, intestines, and fallopian tubes).
7. ● Adenomyosis/Hyperplasia: Endometrial tissue grows into the uterus
and causes thickening of its wall.
● Uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancer.
In the case of cancer, a hysterectomy is a must. In all other cases,
hysterectomy is the last option recommended by a doctor after
different treatments fail to improve a patient’s condition.
8. How Do I Prepare for a Hysterectomy?
The process of preparing for surgery is a stressful time. However, there
are ways to help you prepare and ensure that the procedure and
recovery as easy and pain-free as you can. Gathering all the information
as possible will allow you to feel comfortable and well-prepared prior to
your surgery.
