1. One Stop Rapid Diagnosis
Breast Clinic
By Dr. Nay Myo Htet
2. What is One-Stop Rapid breast clinic ?
The One-Stop Rapid breast clinic is
• a dedicated clinic aimed at evaluating all breast health or presents with breast
cancer symptoms and
• is designed to reassure, diagnose and inform women about any breast
problem.
• You can see a consultant breast surgeon, have any scans that you need and get
the results on the same day. Sometimes you may have a biopsy, where we take a
small sample of breast tissue to check under a microscope. In that case, you
return in one week to get the results when they have been analysed.
3. Who should book an appointment at the One-Stop
Breast Clinic?
• It is important to see a doctor without delay if there are any changes
in your breasts.
• Most changes are not a sign of cancer, but it is always best for a
doctor to examine you.
4. You should consider booking an appointment at the One-Stop Breast
Clinic if you notice:
• a lump, thickening or swelling in your breast or armpit
• a change in the size, shape or feel of one or both breasts
• a change in the position of the nipple, such as turning inwards
• fluid, which may be bloodstained, leaking from either nipple
• constant pain in your breast, nipple or armpit
• skin changes in your breast, such as dimpling like the skin of an
orange, a rash or redness
5. Which healthcare professionals work in the One-Stop
Breast Clinic?
The professional team includes:
• A Consultant Breast Surgeon
• Mammography Specialist Radiographer (to take mammograms)
• A Consultant Radiologist (to read the result of mammograms and/or
ultrasound scans)
• Breast Care Nurse Specialist (to offer information, support
and counselling)

7. What happens at the One-Stop Rapid Diagnosis Breast
Clinic?
• When you arrive in the clinic area, our receptionist greets you and
asks for your details. This includes details of your GP and any private
medical insurance.
• We then call you into the clinic room. You meet the consultant breast
surgeon while the breast care nurse is present. You can tell the
surgeon about your symptoms and concerns. The surgeon asks about
any other medical conditions that you may have and any medicines
that you take. They also check whether you have a family history of
breast cancer.
8. • After you have explained your medical history, your breasts are
examined. We ask you to undress to your waist in a private changing
area and remove your bra. The breast care nurse should be present as
a chaperone (someone to accompany you for support) during your
examination. If the nurse is not there and you would like to have a
chaperone, please let us know.
• The surgeon examines both of your breasts and armpits and arranges
any scans that you may need. This could be an ultrasound, a
mammogram (an X-ray picture of each breast) or both. We perform
the scans with the latest imaging equipment in our Diagnostic Centre.
This is just around the corner from the clinic room.
9. What are the advantages of coming to the One-Stop
Breast Clinic?
• At the One-Stop Breast Clinic, you see a consultant breast surgeon
and consultant radiologist in the same visit. Your breasts are
examined and you have any scans and biopsies that you need on the
same day. If you do not need biopsies, and your examination and
scans are normal, you leave the clinic reassured that your symptoms
and concerns were fully investigated.
• The One-Stop Breast Clinic is different from a traditional clinic where
you may have to visit several times. Usually, you would make one visit
to see the breast surgeon, another visit to have scans and a potential
third visit to get the results.
10. • At One-Stop Breast Clinic, you do not need to make repeated visits to
the hospital. This is more convenient for you and saves time. It also
reduces the anxiety of waiting for scans and results.

15. What is breast surgeon?
• A breast surgeon specializes in the surgical care of breast diseases and
conditions.
• Breast surgeons perform breast biopsy, lumpectomy, mastectomy,
breast reconstruction, and other procedures to treat many breast
conditions, including breast cancer in both men and women.
• Breast surgeons also care for patients at risk for breast cancer and
those with noncancerous problems, such as breast cysts.
16. A breast surgeon typically:
• Evaluates the patient's medical history and performs a breast cancer
risk assessment and physical exam
• Orders and interprets laboratory and imaging tests
• Prescribes medications
• Performs minimally invasive procedures such as mammography
guided biopsy
• Performs breast surgery including lumpectomy, mastectomy, and
breast reconstruction
• Works closely with your primary care doctor and other specialists to
ensure optimal care
17. What is breast care nurse?
• A Certified Breast Care Nurse is an RN who has obtained a certificate
in breast care and works primarily with patients at any stage after
being diagnosed with breast cancer.
• This nurse has specialized training and knowledge of breast health,
diagnosis and staging of breast cancer, treatment modalities,
symptom management, survivorship resources and, if applicable, end
of life care.
18. The breast care nurse is involved in the treatment of patients with
breast cancer throughout its various stages.
• Diagnosis and Staging: The nurse assists with preparing patient for tests,
laboratory work and providing education on the final results that lead to an
appropriate diagnosis and staging of cancer.
• Treatment: The nurse assists in scheduling, educating and supporting patients
throughout the course of cancer treatment. This may include medication
management, chemo and/or radiation. The breast care nurse may be
responsible for contacting the patient to check in on how well they are
tolerating the treatment plan and collaborate with the oncologist to make any
changes. The certified breast care nurse will follow the patient throughout the
course of treatment, including monitoring if the patient is hospitalized and
providing check-in phone calls.
19. • Symptom Management: Spanning from medication management for
symptoms to alternative medicine therapies, the nurse will see the patient
through and help them find a symptom management plan that works for
them. The certified breast care nurse plays an integral role in communicating
between patient, doctor and treatment team while assisting in finding a plan
of care that works for the patient's symptoms.
• Survivorship: When a patient is considered in remission the breast care nurse
provides education on symptoms to watch for as well as resources for
continued support. The nurse may assist in arranging follow-up appointments
as recommended.
• End of Life Care: If a patient does reach a point in their cancer journey where
they decide to withdraw from treatment and focus on comfort care rather
than curative care, the certified breast care nurse will collaborate with
hospice to ensure the end of life for a patient is as comfortable as possible.
The highlight is on symptom management to improve quality of life and
comfort.
