Rights.

3. Define rights
Rights are legal, social, or ethical
principles of freedom or entitlement; that
is, rights are the fundamental normative
rules about what is allowed of people or
owed to people according to some legal
system, social convention, or ethical
theory.
For e.g. A right to life, a right to choose; a
right to vote, to work, to strike.
4. Features/Nature of Rights:
Rights exist only in society. These are the
products of social living.
Rights are claims of the individuals for
their development in society.
Rights are rational and moral claims that
the people make on their society.

Natural rights
Moral rights
Contractual rights
Legal rights
Human rights
6. Types of rights…..
Natural rights: People inherit several
rights from nature. Before they came to
live in society and state, they used to live
in a state of nature. In it, they enjoyed
certain natural rights, like the right to life,
right to liberty and right to property.
Moral Rights: Moral Rights are based on
human consciousness. These are based on
human sense of goodness and justice.
7. Legal rights: Legal rights are those rights
which are accepted and enforced by the
state. Any violation of any legal right is
punished by law.
Legal rights are equally available to all the
citizens. All citizens enjoy legal rights
without any discrimination.
Legal Rights are of three types
Civil rights- Political rights-Economical
rights
8. Contractual rights
These rights originate from the practice of
promise – keeping. They apply to
particular individuals to whom contractual
promises have been made. Examples:
Rights to purchase a product /service
Right to sell a product / service.
Right to seek compensation
9. Human rights
Human Rights are the rights of highest order.
They are morally important and are possessed in
virtue of the universal moral status of human
beings. They are protected and supported by
international and national laws and treaties.
Examples: education, freedom, religion, speech,
movement , information, press etc.
10. Bills of rights
A bill of rights, sometimes called
a declaration of rights or a charter of
rights, is a list of the most important
rights to the citizens of a country.
11. Patient bill of rights
The Patient’s Bill of Rights is the first bioethical
statement emphasizing the rights of patients in
today’s health care system.
It refers to the legal rights of patients such as the
right to know about treatment details, to decide
whether to take treatment or refuse, to informed
consent before performing any procedure, and to
be clarified.
12. The patient has the right to get respectful care.
The patient has the right to know relevant
information about his diagnosis, treatment, and
prognosis.
The patient has the right to know the identity of
physicians, nurses, and others involved in his or
her care.
Has also right to know financial expenditure
expected to occur/afford.
The patient has the right to make decisions
about the plan of care .
13. The patient has the right to privacy for case
discussion, consultation, examination, and
treatment.
Patient has right for maintaining his confidentiality.
The patient has the right to consent to or decline to
participate in proposed research studies or human
experimentation.
The patient has the right to be informed of hospital
policies and practices that relate to patient care
treatment, and responsibilities. The patient has the
right to be informed of available facilities.
14. Describe the role of nurse in relation to bills
of rights
Nurses role is to practice in a manner to fulfill
their obligations to society and to those who
receive nursing care.
Nurses role is to practice in environments that
allow them to act in accordance with
professional standards and legally authorized
scope of practice.
15. Nurses role is to work in an environment
that supports and facilitates ethical
practice, according to code of ethics for
Nurses.
Nurses role is to freely and openly
advocate for themselves and their patients,
without fear of retribution.
