2. What is Smoking?
• The action or habit of inhaling and exhaling the
smoke of tobacco or a drug.
• Smoking is a practice in which a substance is
burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be
tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Most
commonly the substance is the dried leaves of
the tobacco plant which have been rolled into a
small square of rice paper to create a small,
round cylinder called a CIGARETTE. S
5. Active and Passive Smoking H
Active Smoking
• The active smoker is the guy
with the cigarette. Passive
smokers are the people upon
whom the smoke is inflicted.
• The factors of dose,
concentration, duration, and
host susceptibility all
contribute to the adverse
health effects observed in an
individual.
• It harms the person directly
and exposes him or her to
many health risks.
Passive Smoking
• Passive smoking is the inhalation
of smoke, called second-hand
smoke (SHS), or environmental
tobacco smoke (ETS), by persons
other than the intended "active"
smoker. It occurs when tobacco
smoke permeates any
environment, causing its
inhalation by people within that
environment. Exposure to
second-hand tobacco is more
dangerous than active smoking
7. Vaping and Hookah A
• A vaporizer or vaporiser, colloquially known as a vape, is a
device used to vaporize substances for inhalation. Plant
substances can be used, commonly cannabis, tobacco, or
other herbs or blends.
• A hookah is a single- or multi-stemmed instrument
for vaporizing and smoking flavored tobacco, or
sometimes cannabis or opium, whose vapor or smoke is
passed through a water basin often glass-based before
inhalation.
• Hookah smoke contains many of same harmful chemicals
in traditional cigarette smoke including- CO,
tar,As,Chromium,cobalt,formaldhehyde,Cd,Ni,acetaldhehy
de,acrolyn,Pb,polonium 210( cancer causing agent
radioactive element).
8. A common misconception about hookah is that, it removes nicotine
and other toxins from tobacco and filters it…but actually the toxicity of
smoke remain unchanged and it similarly harms us as cigarette
9. Electronic cigarette R
• An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a
handheld electronic device that simulates the
feeling of smoking. It works by heating a liquid
to generate an aerosol, commonly called a
"vapor", that the user inhales.
• It can be flavored with flavor of fruit, nicotine,
brown sugar etc.
10. Health Consequences S
Smoking Cigarette
• Increased risk of stroke and
brain damage.
• Eye cataracts, muscular
degeneration, yellowing of
whites of eyes.
• Loss of sense of smell and
taste.(olfactory nerves)
• Yellow teeth, tooth decay and
bad breath.
• Cancer of the nose, lip, tongue
mouth and even blood cancer
due to formation of
carboxyheamoglobin.
Vaping and Hookah
• Dehydration.
• Dry Mouth.
• Headache.
• Coughing.
• Sore throat.
• Most e-cigarettes contain
nicotine, an addictive substance
that can negatively impact
adolescent brain development.
• Side effects include increased
heart rate and blood pressure,
lung disease, chronic bronchitis
and insulin resistance leading to
type 2 diabetes.
13. Addiction and quitting… S
• Remember, smoking is not only a bad habit—
it's an addiction. The drug inside tobacco that
people are addicted to is called nicotine. Just
like with other addictions, people who
are addicted to cigarettes have a compulsive
