In the current era of transformation, there's no doubt that
Women are making their presence known in the business
world. Be it influencing boardroom decisions, building a
flourishing brand, or creating the vision for business success,
women in leadership positions have made great strides to shape
the world we live in.
However, despite all the contributions and achievements, we still have a lot of ground to cover. Over
the last decades, we have seen more women claiming leadership positions across industries as well as
in paid work. But continued headwinds, such as the industry environment, employer policies, and
societal expectations are still limiting the opportunities that women can access or pursue.
In fact, according to the statistics retrieved from The World Bank Gender Data Portal, only 1 in 3 small,
medium, and large businesses are owned by women globally. Speaking of this rate across regions, Latin
America and the Caribbean have higher participation of women in business (50%) with the lowest
being 18% in South Asia.
So, what can be done to improve the stats? We know women have a hard time carving out a space in
leadership positions and owning businesses, but we can make the change happen with collective efforts
and comprehensive initiatives. We, at The Chief's Digest, have made a humble attempt to bring out the
stories of women in leadership roles aiming to do our bit in creating awareness and facilitating better
representation of women in the business world.
We hope this serves as an inspiration and encouragement for more and more women to stand up and be
counted in business and beyond and direct millions who can change the world! The Chief's Digest is
proud to honor the spirit of the women featured in this issue and celebrate their success stories.

her personal healing work with the
amazing practitioners who have been
drawn to Sedona from all over the
world.
In 2001, just two weeks before 9/11,
Debra received the message that she
was supposed to move to Sedona. She
followed the instructions, and six
months later started Sedona Soul
Adventures. Drawing from her
personal experience of coming to
Sedona to heal, Debra realized that the
healing came from utilizing the unique
energy of Sedona and working one-on-
one with different practitioners on
different aspects of her healing process.
Through the vehicle of Sedona Soul
Adventures, she developed the unique
process of deeply transformational,
customized retreats for individuals and
couples. Since then, the lives (and
relationships) of thousands of people
have been transformed through the
work of Sedona Soul Adventures.

Imost influential women leaders in

just made a mark for themselves in the
world but are also making an impact in
the lives around them. At the moment,
we couldn't be more honored to have
received the chance of interacting with
Debra Stangl and presenting her story.
Debra Stangl is an example of how life
is full of second chances. In 1999, she
was a divorce attorney in Omaha,
Nebraska, hating her work, depressed,
40 pounds overweight, and in an
unhappy marriage. Through a strange
set of circumstances, she came to the
spiritual mecca of Sedona, Arizona for
the first time and experienced a
spiritual reawakening that changed her
life.
She closed her law practice, and over
the next three years, traveled back to
Sedona over and over again, pursuing
In Conversation with Debra Stangl,
The Essence of Sedona Soul
Adventures
What inspired you to become an
entrepreneur? In what circumstances
did you find your
leadership/entrepreneurial spirit?
Both of my parents were entrepreneurs
and out of 6 children, 4 are
entrepreneurs. I discovered early on that
I wasn't at my best when I was working
for someone else and not fulfilling my
dreams.
What was the toughest part of
starting? How did you manage to
overcome them and move forward?
In both of my businesses (as an attorney
and starting Sedona Soul Adventures),
the toughest part of starting out was
money. Especially 40 years ago, no one
wanted to invest in a woman. That's
gotten a little better, but not much.

accessible to everyone. But on a
deeper level, we must demand that
women have an equal footing in all
areas of life, including education,
government, and business. We have
to foster a mindset that gender
discrimination will not be tolerated.
Women in entrepreneurship are
crucial not only for improved
economic growth but also for a
better society. What are your
thoughts on this?
How crazy is the idea that half of the
world's population shouldn't
contribute their talents and skills?
How crazy is the idea that everyone
shouldn't be able to be, do or have
whatever they want? I am of the
belief that everyone should be able to
live their life in the way they want, as
long as they're not damaging the
planet or other people. Women
should be able to be whatever they
want – wives, mothers, corporate
leaders, police officers, bankers,
investors, engineers, scientists,
whatever.
When you come across new or
unpopular ideas that could be
beneficial for the organization, how
do you push for systemic change?
Because I own my own business and
have fabulous people working with
me, I'm in the wonderful position to
be able to institute changes I want,
with my team's concurrence. If my
team isn't in agreement with what I
want to do, I will most often defer to
the team.
How do you define success? Do you
think there is a formula to achieve
success?
I define success very differently now
than I did when I was younger. When
I was an attorney, I had the traditional
definition of success, which had to do
with accomplishment, financial
How does your organization provide
value to your consumers or society at
large?
As our motto states, we are
“Transforming lives, one soul at a
time.” I am on a personal mission to
have everyone live their best life. Most
people are living their lives in
disconnection and unhappiness. They
don't realize they can move beyond the
pain and trauma that have caused most
of their disconnection and
unhappiness. That's what we help them
do.
What does your company do in this
fiercely competitive business world
to stand out from the crowd?
Each of our retreats is custom designed
for each individual or couple,
consisting of private, one-on-one (or
two-on-one) sessions. It's the
customization that means everything.
The pain and trauma, which brought
you to where you are, are different than
the pain and trauma which brought
someone else, and what you need for
healing is not what someone else
needs. This is why group retreats don't
work; there isn't a one-size-fits-all that
works for everyone. Plus, we do our
work in incredibly beautiful Sedona,
Arizona, one of the most beautiful
places on Earth, where our world-
famous vortex energy contributes
greatly to the transformations which
happen.
Considering the social, cultural, and
personal barriers that foreshorten
the confidence and capabilities of
women from taking up leadership
roles, what programs or policies can
be put in place to help more women
come forward in business?
We must start by enforcing equal pay
for women. It's incredible to me that
we still don't have this. We must also
provide provisions for healthcare and
childcare and ensure they are easily
reward, acknowledgment, etc. Once I
had those, I found myself with the
feeling of “Is that all there is?”.
I discovered that the things society told
me would make me happy, made me
feel accomplished, but not happy and
complete. It was not until I discovered
my spiritual purpose and connection
that my life became really blissful. And
incredibly, I manifested even more
accomplishment, financial reward, and
acknowledgment when I was utilizing
the spiritual principles that we teach at
Sedona Soul Adventures. Many of our
clients are in the same position I was
in, and we show them that the way to
really turbocharge your life is to be
operating in connection on all levels –
physical, mental, emotional, and
spiritual.
Business leaders have always
emphasized the habit of reading for
success, on the record. Is there a
book that you draw inspiration
from?
I am usually reading 2-3 books at the
same time and I love reading.
I hope people can understand why I
say the book that I read the most often
is my own book “The Journey To
Happy – How Embracing The Concept
That Nothing Is Wrong Can Transform
Your Life”. When I'm not feeling
100% or when I'm starting to think that
something is wrong, it helps me to
remember to practice what I preach. It
actually humbles me to read it in those
moments.
On a larger level, one of the books that
had a profound effect on me at an early
age was “Man's Search for Meaning”
by Victor Frankl. The thought that
someone could use the power of their
mind to transcend the horrors of a Nazi
death camp made me understand that
we make the decision whether or not to
allow our circumstances to define us.

I would tell them to listen to their
feminine intuition, it knows more than
you might think. And I would never
tell anyone to never give up. There's a
difference between working really hard
and getting to the point where the
Universe is telling you, “This isn't
working”. We have to listen and feel
that when it happens and sometimes,
we need to shift course. That doesn't
mean to stop doing everything, it
means you don't fight what's not
working and be willing to shift.
What are your plans for the future?
What do you want to achieve or
build next?
I've just completed the second edition
of my book, “The Journey to Happy”. I
met my husband 3 weeks after the
book came out and hit #1 in 5
categories and 4 countries. Since then,
I've re-written the chapter on
relationships and I'm very excited for
that to come out. And also, my
How would you describe your career
so far? What have been some of the
make-or-break points in your
entrepreneurial journey?
I have loved it that I have had two very
different careers – 20 years as an
attorney and 20 years leading Sedona
Soul Adventures. Both have brought
such richness to my life.
The make-or-break time for me came
when my intuitive self knew that I had
to leave my law practice. I didn't enjoy
it anymore and it was killing me.
Everyone thought I was crazy,
especially because I had no idea what I
was going to do next. But I listened to
my intuition and that has led me to a
level of success and happiness that I
didn't think was possible.
What one piece of advice would you
give any aspiring women business
leaders reading this? How would you
encourage them to never give up?
husband and I are planning to write a
book on relationships – I'm super
excited about that, I think it's going to
help a lot of people.
One of the strange benefits of the
pandemic is that it forced us to start
doing our retreats online because no
one was traveling to Sedona. We
discovered that our online retreats pack
the same punch and create the same
transformations as our in-Sedona
retreats because our Practitioners are
such masters at utilizing the
transformational energy of Sedona that
it doesn't matter whether you're in their
healing space or your own home. They
are masters at connecting you with it
and creating these amazing
transformations. This now means as
long as people have a good internet
connection, they can be anywhere in
the world. We still have a language
barrier at this time, but we're working
on that as well.

Pte. Ltd.
Takes A Leap Forward to Serve Humankind
Through Collaborative Partnership and
Advanced Technologies
360 HealthTech is a spin-off business
from 360 Degree Digital whose core
business is in designing improved
technological solutions to help small,
medium businesses pioneering their
digital transformation roadmap in the
realm of innovative capabilities, user
experience, services and products. The
company sells Artificial Intelligence

businesses.
360 HealthTech: Getting Off the
Grounds
360 HealthTech was incorporated in
the Year 2012 to address the silver
generation's healthcare issues.
Why was the company set up?
360 HealthTech was founded with a
mission to connect the world via a
collaborative platform by borrowing
the strengths from the most advanced
technologies prevalent in developed
countries and address the social health
issues that are being faced by the
majority at large.
As COVID-19 spreads like wildfire
infecting millions of people around the
world, what the world needs now are
ready solutions that are effective and
can ease problems quickly. However,
coming up with new inventions and

effectiveness does take time. As time

the inventions from other developed
countries that have already delivered
results is a wise move to control the
ferocious COVID-19 pandemic.
Hence, 360 Health Tech was born to
ease the pain of many people
struggling to battle the deadly COVID-
19 pandemic.
How did you manage to take 360
HealthTech to the level that it is in
today?
360 Health Tech was formed in
turbulent times when the COVID -19
was taking over the world. Although
we were focused on taking calculated
risks, it wasn't an easy decision to
make as many companies had plunged
into recession due to the economic
lockdown. What actually drove me to
take this courageous move is, perhaps,
my inborn trait to strive in the storm.
Moreover, I believe that promoting
human welfare and bringing relief to
mankind is the noblest of acts that one
could do during such tough times. And
I am indeed very honoured to be united
with a group of like-minded
collaborators and be a part of this
humanitarian effort.
What were the challenges that you
had to go through during your initial
months?
The AIoT products distribution
channels from 360 HealthTech
collaborative platform was set up to
meet the needs of countries around the
world, from APAC to Europe. Till date,
the challenges come from the
countries' governance compliances,
adaptation to the changing
technologies into the countries'
ecosystem, customers' preferences,
cultural differences and practices of the
locals. This significantly affects the
pace of adoption of the AIoT products
between countries. Our company

As a question on sustainability, where
do you see your company a couple of
years from now?
After COVID19 dies off next year, 360
HealthTech will divert back to solving
the aged population's elder care-related
issues with its healthcare technology. We
have plans to expand overseas with
business collaboration and partnership
with China's renowned universities to
research and develop new AI
technologies that will benefit both
countries. Deploying Artificial
Intelligence in Robotics and Automation
and integrating Machine Learning, Deep
Learning into the Internet of Things, are
definitely part of the company's important
roadmap to solving these exciting
eldercare challenges ahead.
The Leader Who Made 360
HealthTech Possible
Jennifer Lauretta, Founder and CTIO
Jennifer is a serial tech entrepreneur who
founded 360 HealthTech and 360 Smart
Home as a part of 360 Degree Digital
Group Business. The three incorporated
companies are all inter-related in the
nature of business operations, each
complementing one another.
“360 HealthTech promotes fostering and

and sustainable cities.”
researchers, scientists,
manufacturers and developers will
continue to adapt to comply with
stringent regulations and to fit into
the worldwide market.
What's your take on innovation in
the marketplace?
In my humble opinion, companies
that invest time, effort and money in
finding new and better ways of
doing things have an advantage
over others in the market. It's that
simple. Innovation not only helps a
company offer exciting new
products and services to customers
but also allows companies to stay
profitable and survive in the market.
Encouraging innovation isn't easy.
From juggling competing company
priorities to overcoming internal
resistance and inertia, there are a lot
of things that can get in the way. No
matter what industry one is in,
unlocking the innovative potential
of the company's people – the
company's business more generally
– comes down to a mix of
management approaches, shared
values, strategy, and resources.
What are the factors that make
your brand stand out from the
crowd?
It's Originality, Understanding,
Boldness, Consistency, Value.
I think corporate clients come to us
for the originality of our solutions;
the perception that we take time to
understand their problems and
pain they are trying to solve; the
bold approach of our application in
using advanced technologies that is
beyond their expectation;
consistency in our customers' and

Laying Down the Winning Formula for
Customer Acquisition and Engagement
Through Digital Marketing
Technology and Solutions
In the modern era of rapid
business and industry
transformations, the way to
brand success lies in the ability of the
business to offer a blended customer
experience. Customer engagement
can no more be achieved by selling
only the best products; businesses
have to focus on creating unique
selling experiences as well.
Considering the multitude of
connected devices that customers
today use to shop, businesses also
need to look at leveraging
omnichannel marketing to tie up all
the channels together and deliver a
unified and personalized customer
experience.
Another important area to focus on is
the A.I. revolution that has completely
changed the way the consumer
interaction with the brand occurs and
how shopping is done. A.I. algorithms
and customer data can be used to
generate actionable insights on the
exact customer preferences which can
then help to deliver an unmatched
convenience to the consumers.

interactions for businesses in the
United States, Canada, and 11
additional countries.
We had the pleasure of interviewing
Alexi Venneri, Co-founder and CEO
of Digital Air Strike, who was kind
enough to share her journey,
struggles, and successes with us.
Presenting Digital Air Strike from
Alex's perspective.
What kind of organizations survive
and flourish into the distant future?
Companies that are flexible,
innovative, and always put their
clients first will weather any storm…
or pandemic. While many companies
were closing, Digital Air Strike was
developing new technology to help
Moreover, businesses can also
forecast in advance the inventory and
outward product flow and when a
consumer will be most interested in
buying a particular product. This can
enhance the efficiency of the business
as well as expedite its supply chain
operations.
Therefore, now it is obvious that
without personalization, creating
value for the audience can be next to
impossible. At times, handling such
processes and strategies can be
extremely challenging for businesses.
That's where Digital Air Strike comes
in as a leader in customer engagement
and digital retailing. It can help
businesses understand their customer
needs, wants, and buying behavior
even before they are aware of it.
Consequently, the insights can be
converted into meaningful strategies
to better engage with the target
audience.
So far, Digital Air Strike has helped

COVID-19. The company launched
its Virtual Retailing Program in
March to help businesses leverage
video, text messaging, social media,
AI, and automation to transact safely
with customers and allow consumers
to do more researching, shopping, and
buying online.
Embracing technology is especially
important as more businesses have
had to close their doors and lay off or
furlough employees. Technology can
fill the gaps when staff is limited.
Even as businesses start to open their
physical locations again, many
customers will still feel the safest and
most comfortable doing their
shopping online at home. How
companies learn to embrace this new
normal is key to their success.
Why was the company set up? And
how did you expand your company
and its offerings over the years?
Alexi was among the first to
recognize the power of social media
in business-to-consumer marketing
during the Great Recession. This was
a time when businesses were cutting
their marketing budgets but
desperately needed revenue. Sound
familiar? Now, during the COVID-19
pandemic, Alexi is continuing her
passion for helping businesses
continue to engage and transact online
during this economic and health
crisis. Today, Digital Air Strike is the
leading social media, intelligent lead
response technology, and consumer
engagement company. Alexi's natural
leadership abilities and industry
experience drove the company to
innovate new products and solutions
that help businesses. Whether through
acquisitions or in-house development,
the company has launched several
digital marketing. The company grew,
expanded, and hired more employees to
fulfill those needs first for dealers, and
then for other businesses, including
healthcare, tire and service shops, and
multi-family housing and senior
communities.
How successful was your first project
roll on?
Landing a big deal with a major auto
manufacturer increased Digital Air
Strike's client base exponentially. Alexi
rallied the company to ensure that the
technology and team could support the
client's needs. Because of Digital Air
Strike's success, the partnership with the
OEM continues today and has since
expanded even more.
What kind of mixed responses have
you received from your consumers
over the years? How have they
motivated you to shape your offerings
and grow the company?
Digital Air Strike understands that
businesses can be reluctant to adopt new
technology, so with every offering,
there's a bit of education. Teaching
companies how to best use social media,
respond the right way to reviews, and
optimize technology is not always the
easiest sell. But showing results other
businesses are getting helps. For
example, Rice Toyota in Greensboro,
North Carolina embraced DAS' Virtual
Retailing Program during the pandemic
and used DAS' Video Logix video tool
to record, send, and track videos. They
sold 10 cars in record time and had over
50 people click on their Video Logix
video landing page. They learned the
power of text messaging by sending out
timely and effective news and specials.
They received over 200 responses from
one Response Path Power Text.
Understanding the needs of your clients
and adding new products and features to
new solutions recently including
Credit Logix credit
prequalification technology, which
streamlines the vehicle financing
process, and Response Path Power
Text, a bulk text messaging
solution that delivers timely,
relevant information to consumers'
mobile devices.
In 2018, DAS acquired an artificial
intelligence chat tech startup to
help expand its tech offerings and
growth in the health care industry.
The AI messaging solution
Response Path allows companies
to more seamlessly interact with
leads through a business' website,
Facebook Messenger and/or
texting. In 2019, DAS acquired the
assets of an ad tech lead generation
company and a software company
that simplifies leasing and
financing operations for
automotive retailers. These
acquisitions represented the
company's largest expansion and
helped round out its consumer
engagement and digital retailing
platform.
What challenges did you face in
your initial years? What can
your peers learn from it?
One of the challenges of starting
your own business is finding the
right talent and getting enough
new clients to keep the company
afloat and pay employees. Alexi
didn't take a paycheck for at least
the first six months as she
established her clients in the auto
industry. Landing a big deal with
an auto manufacturer helped the
company early on. Alexi continued
to innovate and offer more
solutions to the problems that
dealers were facing related to

company forward.
'Leaders cannot optimize results by
themselves; they need employees'
support and assistance.' How does
your company interpret this
saying?
Surrounding yourself with the right
talent and employees who are
working toward the same goal is
important for any business, and that
rings true for Digital Air Strike. Alexi
has assembled a team of leaders with
deep industry experience as well as
those with diverse backgrounds. She
looks for team members who embody
the company's core values: Passion in
Action, Whatever It Takes, Think
Like an Owner, and Clients Win.
Alexi also seeks to find employees
who are open to learning and growing
to build the company.
Trust is a difficult attribute to
measure and a delicate dynamic to
maintain. How do you maintain this
with your employees?
Transparency is important to maintain
with your employees, especially
during unprecedented times like the
pandemic. Digital Air Strike hosted
weekly, and now bi-weekly online
company meetings, to keep
employees apprised of how the
company is doing, what each
department is up to, and to continue
recognizing employees who were
going above and beyond with WIT
(Whatever It Takes) awards. Alexi
also has continued her regular
meetings with new employees and
those celebrating work anniversaries.
What used to be monthly in-person
lunches has now turned into virtual
happy hours. The goal is to get
feedback from employees to learn
more about what they like about the
hundreds of thousands of dollars
back financially and countless hours
through employee volunteerism to
dozens of charities. The charities are
chosen by employees and support
causes meaningful to their
backgrounds and families. For
example, during August, Digital Air
Strike put together several themed
baskets to be auctioned off online to
help the Phoenix, Arizona nonprofit,
Helping Hands for Single Moms.
DAS COO Erica Sietsma is a single
mom herself, was raised by a single
mother and as a board member of
this group, it's a nonprofit that she
loves to support.
Knowing the Trailblazer
Alexi Venneri, Co-founder & CEO
Alexi started the Scottsdale-based
company 10 years ago at her kitchen
table after the marketing agency,
where she worked, closed during the
Great Recession. She knew
businesses needed an inexpensive
way to reach consumers and that
social media provided that
opportunity. Digital Air Strike was
one of the first to develop tools and
technology to help businesses
leverage the reach of social media.
Alexi is a lifelong marketer and her
varied experience includes working
for Major League Baseball, a
technology startup, and a large
corporation. She's always been
fascinated by entrepreneurs and
wrote a book about them called,
Balls! 6 Rules for Winning Today's
Business Game.

company and suggestions they
have to improve it. Alexi takes
notes and shares the suggestions
with managers to address and
implement if appropriate. Many of
the suggestions have improved
processes and daily tasks within
the company and supported
employees to “Think Like an
Owner.” Employees also get an
Uber Eats gift card to order food at
home and enjoy their meal and a
drink during the happy hour.
What do you feel are the reasons
behind your company's
reputation?
Digital Air Strike creates a five-
star social media experience for
consumers which converts them
into engaged customers. Through
excellent customer service, once-
in-a-lifetime client appreciation
parties at events like the annual
NADA (National Automobile

How She's Helping Organizations Align
Their HR Departments with
Business Strategy with HRBoost
You'll notice it instantly. Nicole
Martin, CEO and Founder of
HRBoost, loves what she
does, and she does it remarkably well.
“I'm the accidental entrepreneur,” said
Nicole, “I looked back after starting
my own business and said, 'I started a
business. Whoa!'” Nicole didn't set out
to create HRBoost. She simply
followed her passion to help clients
understand the importance human
resources can play in developing a
strong business. Today Nicole is a
successful entrepreneur and an HR
industry innovator who is dedicated to
helping small to mid-size businesses
realize their potential through their
employees.
A self-professed “country girl in
disguise,” Nicole Martin grew up in
Montana, where, she says, “Everyone
knows you and greets you on the
street.” Nicole was also lucky to have a
great mentor early in life: her mom.
“My mother is highly spiritual, and she
raised me with the philosophy of being
created for school.” When Nicole was
finished with her presentation, the
director created a human resources
department for the site, hired a
manager and moved 18-year-old
Nicole from reception to human
resources.
Nicole has been building HR
departments from the ground up ever
since. What makes her approach so
unique, she says, is that she begins
with the business' vision and creates
HR programs that are completely
integrated with that vision. From the
hiring process to annual reviews, the
programs Nicole creates are designed
to further the business, boost
productivity and help employees
understand why and how their
contributions are meaningful.
“There's a lot of misinformation out
there in the business community. These
big businesses are coming into small to
mid-size companies, and they are
offering something that they call full-
happy,” said Nicole. “She always
believed in that you are a special
person—she ingrained that in me—and
you are capable of anything.”
At the age of 18, Nicole was ready to
start proving her mom right. She left
Montana and moved in with her
godmother in Libertyville, Illinois.
Right out of high school, Nicole got a
job as a receptionist at a pre-Y2K firm
where she found her passion quite by
accident. “They were hiring all these
computer experts from overseas, but
when they arrived, the company just
put them in the reception area because
they didn't know what to do with
them,” recalled Nicole. “It was just
inhumane.”
During the same time, Nicole was
working on a training program for a
college human resources class. “I
wanted to help these guys out in the
hallway, so I just marched into the
director's office and asked him if he
wanted to see the training program I

26. Minesoft
Leading The Market In The
Intelligent Patent Information
Solutions Space
Inception of Minesoft
Minesoft is a family-run business that
started as an ideal way to combine
Ann Chapman's and her husband
Ophir Daniel's unique skillsets within
sci-tech publishing and web
development.
Initially, they worked closely with
Questel-Orbit and Research Business
Information (RBI Inc) before
branching out with their products in
the first decade of 2000.
We had the pleasure of talking to Ann
Chapman and Ophir Daniel about
Minesoft. Below is an excerpt from
the interview.
What are your company offerings?
How have consumer responses
shaped them over the years?
Minesoft is an innovative online
patent solutions provider offering its
the initial days. Tell us what were
your challenges and how you
managed to overcome them.
We started from scratch, around the
kitchen table, with an overriding
desire to remain profitable. Despite
not taking on outside investment, we
have grown the company every
single year for 25 years and now
have clients all over the globe – in
every corner, but especially in
advanced manufacturing countries
where patenting is crucial to secure
intellectual property and sell goods
abroad.
Right from day one, we competed
with large international corporations
as well as with small firms like ours
- firms that had specialized in their
sector and managed to carve out
niche expertise and win clients over.
These firms started in a very small
way as a supplier in some big
products and services to national patent
offices, professional search firms, patent
attorney firms, academic institutions,
and many Fortune 500/FTSE 100
companies around the world. Solutions
and services include patent search and
analysis, patent monitoring, competitive
intelligence systems, knowledge
management systems, and more.
Whether it is a small or big update,
Minesoft often collaborates with clients
to build new solutions or adapt to suit
user preferences. For example, the
knowledge management platform, Pat-
KM was built because there was a
demand from legal professionals for a
solution to foster collaboration and
centralize patent information internally.
Also, more recently, a big update was
added to the document delivery
platform, PatDocs, to expand the
translation tool.
Every business, big or small, gets its fair
share of challenges, especially during

products globally and are among our
largest clients.
What would you say are the factors
that have contributed to your
success as an organization?
Search platforms should be built for
users, with input from users,
irrespective of what background these
user communities have. Minesoft
strives to strike the balance between
development cycles while listening to
clients' feedback. If their clients have
ideas about how Minesoft can further
help them, they will do so. Even if the
benefit is focused on a particular
vertical market segment.
Minesoft enjoys one of the lowest
turnover rates in the industry and this
helps them maintain continuity with
client relationships and product and
market insight. As well as this, the
Executive Board has different skillsets
and strengths, therefore
complementing one another and
bringing different perspectives to the
table. There is some crossover, but no
one could replace someone else or
operate in another person's sphere
fully.
Where do you see your company a
few years from now?
Minesoft is in good shape and has a
great team to take the company
further and faster in the upcoming
years. They recently launched a new
patent Search Engine and will
continue working on it in the
following few years to develop some
neat new functionality in areas like
natural language searching, instant
faceting of millions of documents,
and semantics.
received national and international
awards for Best Overall Company of
the year (Regional Chamber of
Commerce) as well as Legal Tech
Company of the Year from ACQ5.
Knowing The Essence And Core
Of Minesoft
Ann Chapman & Ophir Daniel
Ann Chapman started her career at a
big international publishing
company (International Thomson,
later Thomson Reuters) and was sent
all over the world to visit clients and
secure business. After six years,
Chapman moved to a US publishing
company (Ziff Davies Group) in the
field of business information
(companies and markets). She then
returned to patents and sci-tech
publishing with France Telecom
Group spending three years there as
a Director and Managing Director.
Soon after becoming a mother, Ann
Chapman and her husband Ophir
Daniel took the plunge to establish
their own company, Minesoft.
Daniel was at the time programming
in the early Internet era after starting
life in Israel, working in Aviation.
They decided to combine their skills
and were lucky to be given a
distribution and development deal
by France Telecom, and a small
initial loan that started them off.
“We offer an array of products for
the patent information industry,
specializing in patent searching, IP
document retrieval, patent analytics,
and competitive intelligence
systems.”
Minesoft will also develop the area of
automated translations and
landscaping analysis. Artificial
Intelligence is a big buzzword in the
Online Publishing Industry at present
and the team is designing new ideas
in this area to further automate and
streamline our products. They host
about 160 million patent (sci-tech)
documents right now and this is
increasing every week. Such a large
body of research material needs to be
made accessible to companies who
are working to pioneer new solutions.
How has your journey been so far?
Established in 1996, Minesoft quickly
gained market traction due to its
innovative patent information
products. Together Minesoft & RWS
launched PatBase, a searchable
database of patent documents
designed by experts in the complex
art of patent information research.
Since its inception in 2003, PatBase
has attracted over 70,000 users
worldwide.
Since 2000, Minesoft has expanded
its portfolio of innovative patent
information products to include
PatBase Express, PatentOrder,
PatDocs, IPShare, PatentTracker,
Legal StatusTracker, CiteTracker,
Chemical Explorer, Pat-KM, APIs,
and PatBase Analytics. And the
company has established its own
offices in the UK, Germany, and the
USA – with additional dedicated
representatives representing every
corner of the globe.
In 2009 and again in 2015, Minesoft
won the prestigious Queen's Award

32. SkyStem
Transforming the Close and
Reconciliation Process
The journey of a company
doesn't begin at the date of
incorporation. The real journey
begins when an idea is brewing inside
the head of an entrepreneur whose
focus is to bring that idea to life. To
understand the journey of SkyStem, we
must first begin with the story of its
founder. Shagun Malhotra, Founder
and CEO of SkyStem, is a CPA and
CIA by trade, she started her career in
the travel and hospitality industry, and
through her experience in audit and
investigative accounting, she
ultimately fell in love with the world of
audit, controls, and the accounting
process.
A troubled financial services giant
asked Shagun to spearhead the year-
long remediation effort due to broken
internal controls around the month-end
process, upon which she successfully
delivered a clean audit. From this
experience, she saw firsthand the
multitude of problems and risks
platform – ART – that is easy to use
and fast to implement. ART helps
accountants reduce up to 40% of
reconciliations every month and
eliminate up to 90% of administrative
activities around the month-end close
process. This is accomplished by
automating various month-end
activities such system reconciliations,
digital workflow and signatures,
intelligent calculation schedules,
recurring checklists, real-time
dashboards, and ready-made reports. In
some cases, it has helped customers
successfully shorten the time to close
the books by up to 50%.
SkyStem strives to bring soul to
software by providing intelligent and
intuitive solutions that eliminate
redundant work. It provides customers
the opportunity to focus on more
dynamic and fulfilling work. The
company emphasizes the human touch
so that customers get the best of both
worlds – cutting-edge technology
accountants face when employing
manual methods to close the books and
complete reconciliations. She also
realized that existing platforms with
automation in this area were not
suitable for all companies and were
often priced quite high. This meant that
automation was beyond reach for many
mid-sized companies that could benefit
from automation during the close, but
lacked the resources to make a large
software investment and undergo a
multi-month implementation.
This experience motivated Shagun to
found SkyStem, a SaaS provider that
aimed to create an affordably priced
solution to help mid-sized companies
automate the month-end close process.
SkyStem's flagship solution, ART, was
brought to the market shortly after.
Customer First Approach

SkyStem works to make its customers'
lives easier. “The satisfaction that we
gain from a truly content customer is
priceless. This means being responsive,
alert, and proactive with our
customers,” mentions Shagun.
The customer-centric approach has
helped the company deliver a best-in-
class product to the market. ART is
affordable, easy to use and fast to
implement. It provides an efficient way
to perform the month-end close and
focuses on the quality aspect of the
work with unique features that set it
apart. The company offers three
packages that allow ART to be
customizable to the customer's needs
and budget based on the features that
will benefit them the most. Putting the
customer at the core of the product has
always proven beneficial to the
company's success.
A Different Kind of Entrepreneur
Generally, it is more challenging for a
female entrepreneur to build a
company in a male dominated industry.
It is important to stay the course even
with these challenging situations.
Shagun, who has an unconventional
background, spent the first few years of
her childhood on a ship, as her father
was a captain in the merchant navy.
Shagun shares, “My mother
homeschooled me at sea until we
settled in Egypt when I was about
seven years old. That was actually the
first time I stepped into a traditional
classroom. I finished my primary,
secondary, and university studies in
several different countries, and upon
graduation, I fell into the world of
accounting.”
Prior to founding SkyStem, She
worked at Fortune 100 companies such
as Marriott and Freddie Mac. Her work
focused primarily on internal controls
existing customer pool. This has
helped the company to create a strong
and loyal customer base.
“I am also very personally vested in
encouraging female leadership in my
community. My personal involvement
in many aspects of entrepreneurship
such as being a member of a
Department of State panel for women
entrepreneurship and being a judge
for the New York City Business plan
competition has really helped
demonstrated my commitment in this
area.”
Continuing to Inject Intelligence
Predicting anything now is very
difficult especially with the recent
challenges of the pandemic.
Automation around various
accounting processes is inevitable
and the need to upgrade and infuse
automation has never been higher.
The new remote and hybrid work
environment will demand this.
Considering this, Shagun wants to
continue to build and refine the
current product to mirror what the
customers need. “As we continue to
acquire customers, we are always
amazed at and grateful for how many
great ideas are delivered to us by our
customers. Continuing to inject
intelligence into our solution will
enable our customers to do more with
less, and we want that vision to be a
constant focal point,” concludes
Shagun.
Quote: “ART helps CFO and
Controllers streamline the month-end
close and eliminate up to 90% of
manual activities while strengthening
internal controls and corporate
governance.”
and risk mitigation in both
international and domestic arenas.
The challenging situation
throughout her life has led her to
become a different type of
entrepreneur. She makes a
conscious effort to ensure female
presence is represented throughout
all departments at SkyStem and has
always encouraged women to take
on growth-oriented roles regardless
of the industry. “I aim to put a dent
in the gender imbalance in the tech
and finance industry and have
continually advocated for minority
women in the workplace. As a
minority woman myself, I
personally understand this issue by
seeing it through my own
experience as an auditor,” says
Shagun
Distinctive in the Industry
The success of a company is highly
dependent upon the team and its
leadership. No successful business
can be built alone, and having a
good team is as essential as other
things. The SkyStem team is
supportive, creative, and customer
centric and have helped model the
company into the successful
business it is today.
Shagun doesn't believe that there
are only a few magic attributes or
formulas that leads to success. She
defines success as how happy the
customers and staff are. She feels
fortunate enough today to have
employees with her since the
founding of SkyStem. It's important
to have passion, patience, and a
strong commitment to customers.
The company is distinctive in the
industry in that it offers white-glove

Ksenia's interview with The Chief's

How did you come up with the idea
or concept for your business?
The cost of education keeps going up
and if we talk about student debt, it
has reached $1.7 Trillion, which is
huge. Even I graduated from UCLA
Anderson with a massive student
loan.
I saw many families struggling to
meet the cost of education. It's
devastating. As an example, a family
