2. Executive Summary
Background
SafeSonar LLC is committed to promoting safety and security through technological innovation.
SafeSonar’s five owners established the limited liability company while in college at the
University of Oregon. Creating the SafeSonar product was inspired because of multiple women
feeling unsafe on our campus. Throughout each academic school year, the Police Department
sends out multiple campus crime alerts to inform students and faculty of violent acts
committed against both male and female members of the University of Oregon community.
SafeSonar LLC can help to reduce the number of campus crime alerts without a large financial
investment.
There are over 3,000 reported sexual assaults on college campuses and over 300,000 reported
across the United States every year. With the increase of technological capability, it is our
mission to utilize innovation for the empowerment of individuals everywhere. Whether you’re
walking home alone or your child goes to play outside, you deserve to know that you and your
loved ones are safe.
Focus
With over 300 million individuals across the United States and an increase in demand for
electronic wearable devices SafeSonar LLC sees substantial market feedback to support further
expansion. SafeSonar LLC will partner with bracelet device company Fitbit, to manufacture a
line of wristbands that are made with unique SafeSonar technology. SafeSonar will initially sell
its products directly to students and staff in college campus communities.
Target Objectives
2015: 2000 bracelets sold in partnership with the University of Oregon
2016: 1000 bracelets sold on the UO campus, 2000 sold at OSU, 2000 sold at PSU
2017: Expand the SafeSonar brand to the students/faculty at other college campuses
Concept
We will achieve these goals by demonstrating the amazing attributes of SafeSonar bracelets to
college communities. Devices encoded with our innovative product will be encrypted with GPS
technology that connects to a smartphone or computer. Using a smartphone device, the user
will connect his/her bracelet to the nearest police or emergency station in the bracelet’s radius.
While the bracelets are intended to monitor personal health and exercise levels, customers can
now choose to purchase the device with SafeSonar’s mobile panic button and alert system.
SafeSonar’s technology can be used by people of all ages, so we hope to expand to family
venues like Disneyland and Zoos. Being safe is essential to everyone in society, so we hope to
help members of our communities attain the fundamental human right of safety. Safety should
be for everyone… Safety should be simple.
3. Our company of five partners, SafeSonar LLC, is committed to promoting safety and
security through technological innovation. SafeSonar is a digital application that integrates with
wearable technology devices like wireless watches and bracelets. SafeSonar uses secure GPS
technology to connect the watch/bracelet with police station or response teams in a precise
radius. While this product can be used to help any individual, SafeSonar LLC was established in
response to women college students feeling unsafe in at times rowdy college climate. There are
over 3,000 reported sexual assaults on college campuses every year, while not including non-
reported sexual assaults or even just assault. Causes of sexual assault can stemfrom verbal and
physical harassment, which is very prevalent on college campuses, as 57% of women
undergraduate students and 37% of men have reported sexual harassment. It is our duty as
members of the Eugene community and students at the University of Oregon to provide a
solution to minimize crime and assault on and off campus.
There were several issues relating to crime and assault that inspired us to
create SafeSonar. Personal safety is more at risk in a large college town population, confined to
a very small area. According to research from the United States Department of Education, the
total risk of crime for the University of Oregon is a rating of 112 points, meaning a higher
chance of crime than the national college average of 100. To determine level of risk, the study
analyzes the three most common crimes on college campuses, larceny, rape, and property
crime. With a higher level of crime risk than other college campuses, it’s no surprise that 1 in 5
female University of Oregon students of only reported cases state they've been victims of a
rape or attempted rape. The overall safety on and off campus in Eugene has been heavily
scrutinized in by both local and national media coverage in light of recent events and
4. allegations. SafeSonar intends to make the University less reactive to incidents of assault and
more proactive.
We were also inspired to make SafeSonar to protect children, while reassuring parents
of their child’s safety. Parents and authorities can now be alerted if their child’s bracelet or
watch leaves too far from a designated area’s radius. One of our co-founders worries when her
child walks to and from school without parent supervision. Now, a parent can use their
smartphone to monitor the GPS coordinates of their child’s wristband. SafeSonar makes safety
easy and accessible, allowing users to protect themselves and their loved ones.
SafeSonar LLC has a reached a deal with the wireless bracelet company, Fitbit, to
produce the first ever SafeSonar integrated devices. Fitbit and other technological bracelet
companies can integrate SafeSonar’s unique computer programming data into the device
during the manufacturing process. Devices encoded with our innovative product will be
encrypted with a GPS technology that connects to a smartphone or computer. Using a
smartphone device, the user will connect his/her bracelet to the nearest police or emergency
station in the bracelet’s radius. While the bracelets are intended to monitor personal health
and exercise levels, now customers can choose to purchase the device with SafeSonar’s mobile
panic button and alert system. By partnering with the established wireless bracelet company
Fitbit, SafeSonar has fully tested, developed, and manufactured 2000 initial bracelets to be sold
to the University of Oregon.
The U of O, in partnership with NCU and LCC, hosted a survey to gauge the initial
number of students who were interested in our product. With about 2000 interested
participants, SafeSonar LLC identifies college students as our company’s primary market. By
5. starting at three unique college campuses (one public university, one private university, and
one community college) we will analyze the level of demand for SafeSonar as our proof of
concept. SafeSonar partnered with Fitbit will then sell our products to professors, faculty, and
university employees. If demand for our product continues to rise, we can target similar
potential partners after 2 years in the Eugene area. By our third year of business, potential
partners include an extension into the UO residence halls and student organizations (Dorms
500 / Other 500) and at other colleges within Oregon (PSU 2000 / OSU 2000). Ultimately we
would like to expand to big college campuses after 4 years (UW, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD), while
expanding to new large-scale venues after 5 years (Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, Legoland).
After 5 years of partnership with Fitbit, we intend to integrate with other wearable
device products like Nike Fuel Band and Apple Watch. We believe we can grow fast enough to
reach our 1-5 year objectives because SafeSonar doesn’t face many barriers to entry, as there
aren’t any competitors to our product. Being a technological virtual company, our low cost of
production will generate higher revenue streams that can be reinvested into development of
new features to further protect the individuals and families within our community.
