Hybrid = 30”

Observations #1
•BYOD is so yesterday
•BYOA is the new black
•BYOD + BYOA =
empowered
independent workforce
• Suggests shift in
ER /EE balance of
power
You’ve got the power now
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
“The balance of power in the employer-employee
relationship has shifted – making today’s employees more
like customers or partners than subordinates.”
Customers – replicate digital experience from private life
Partners – transparency, cdm, share of voice
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Self directed learning
I chose the right:
‘course’ - length, complexity
‘trainer’ – style, credibility
At the right time
Covers blind spots
Saves £
& Empowers
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Self directed learning
Why do I need classroom training?
Too many risks: wrong time, wrong group,
wrong content, wrong pace of learning,
wrong instructor….
Why do I need company
training at all?Just make the resources available
to me and I will direct myself
and you can test me.
NB: oh yes and you can also compensate
me accordingly.
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Self directed learning
I know more than the company trainer
I ‘ve been taught by
the best – Ted Talks etc.If I know the space, and I know
my company’s strengths and weaknesses,
then what’s my value in the marketplace?
In this space, I know more than my boss
and I’m better connected
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Yes
But
So does everyone else!
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
In 2000, Netflix CEO proposed a JV to
Blockbuster CEO and his board, and was
laughed out of the room.
Today Netflix has a market cap of $ 44bn (with
revenues more than10 times Blockbuster peak)
But more importantly Netflix has not just
changed the industry model – it has changed
Human behaviour and desire
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
The Netflix effect
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
(20 hours = The traditional 3 day training course)
(10,000 hours = 3.25 years mastering
a specific skill)
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
And now (in the interest of balance) a word from our sponsor.....
Agreed, but what are the implications…..
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
The Social Matrix
‘We will live and conduct business in a social matrix, where virtually all resources
can be found— collaborators, talent, customers, funders. The social matrix will
enable new forms of organisation that are only just becoming apparent’
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Observations #2
•Imagine knowledge transfer events (like ICON UK)
happening on a 24 x 7 basis with people creating,
consuming and commenting at a pace that suited
them.
•Consider the ‘stock’ of human capital being created.
Who owns it? Who can leverage it?
•If the Blockbuster CEO had opened the Netflix JV
option to a wider audience for discussion; it is highly
unlikely that the fatal ‘do nothing’ decision would have
happened.
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
If the playing field is now levelled in terms of access to
information and technology.
Then what’s left to differentiate Co. A from Co. B?
Human Capital – the stock of talent, people and creativity
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Human capital is the stock of knowledge, habits, social and personality
attributes, including creativity, embodied in the ability to perform labour so as
to produce economic value
Traditional – Company centric Modern – People centric
Future – Matrix centric
UKLUG 2012 – Cardiff, Wales
Who is more valuable?
