Editor's Notes
-Introduce yourself and state your title.
-Introduce your section of the presentation
-Letting your WINGS Out is a term we use often in WINGS.
-Can anyone tell me what they believe letting your WINGS out means (Select two people to share)? Allow them to answer.
-Yes/Not quite so with in WINGS letting your WINGS out means being yourself, being comfortable and at the same time being comfortable stepping outside of your comfort zone, sharing yourself with others
-So everyone stand up!
-We all have pealing a banana before correct? So its something that we our comfortable with right? Ok well we are going to make it a little more uncomfortable and let our WINGS out!
-Explain peal bananas!
-Do peel bananas!
So this was a perfect example of letting your WINGS out being comfortable with being uncomfortable and at the same time finding your fun.
So next lets go into a few more vital elements of creating a team willing to let their WINGS out!
-Every team starts with relationships if there are no relationship then there is no team.
-However, before you get there you the leader must create a comfort level of vulnerability.
-Can someone give me the definition?
-Right this can be seen as being weak however, on a team allowing your self to be vulnerable means that you accept your flawless (but openly work on them), means that you know you don’t have all the answers (and you share that), means you allow your team to have input to decision that are made (occasionally), means that you ask for feedback and understand how to take it in and apply it . Means that You show your ID and say “I Did” say that or I did make this mistake or even “I Did” take care of that issue or “I Did” Make that change. Once you get their you will also be about to say “We Did” drop the ball “We Did” need to make a change “We Did a great job today to “We Did” improve overall, but it all starts with the leader.
-If you allow yourself to be vulnerable in these ways, that will translate to your team allowing each team member to let their WINGS out as well.
-This will then allow each team member to open up to you and share concerns, suggestions, ideas, and thoughts leading to a team that allows themselves to be more vulnerable.
-Once that Vulnerability is created and the team is sharing ideas and those ideas are being listen to and applied throughout the program. A since of shared responsibility is created through out the team.
-This will then led to the growth of leadership amongst your team that has been cultivated all by letting your WINGS Out through both supportive actions and language.
Take a step back think about your favorite quick service restaurant. I would have to say mine would be Chick-fil-A. Think about how they greet you in both areas of the restaurant drive thru and front counter. Now think about how you are greeted at times at other restaurants.
Chick-fil-A greets you with a smile and often times leans in closer to you (Body Language/Facial Expression)
Stating: Hi, how may I serve you (Tone kind and caring by using supportive language)
This can complete change your mood. Think about even if you came back with a complaint and your greeted and treated the same way. It causes you to relax clam down and puts you back in that same good place.
I’m not saying that you want to be a Chick-fil-A employee but you want to be Chick-fil-A service minded being intentional with yours and actions which will lead to a professional display of communication.
Supportive/Support- is a word that you will never go a day without hearing in WINGS and a word you should not go without hearing when working on a team. All actions should always stem from a supportive place especially when giving corrective feedback.
Kind and caring- in your actions and words
Tone- It is really important to understand how to manipulate your tone. At times you need to be stern, times you need to express concern, and times for you to express joy. Understanding when to adapt your tone will help convey and express exactly how you feel at that point in time. For ex. I can say Hey Welcome to Chick-fil-A or hey welcome to chick-fil-a
Body Language- is said to be 90% percent of all communication. For example if someone has their arms crossed what feelings come to your mind. If someone approaches you with open arms how does it make you feel. What if someone has their head tilted to the side as you are talking to them. So be mindful of the way you express yourself to others even when you are not talking.
Facial Expression- a smile can help set a warm and positive vibe when needed. At the same time when it comes to being stern you shouldn’t always be smiling when coaching a team member and they just slacked off at their job so know when to adapt.
Now think of your day in Program or around the office. What words come to mine that represent your organization. What actions could be positively effect in a professional manner by your body language, tone, and facial expression.
What are other elements of professionalism that come to your mind.
Visible and Invisible Professionalism
A way to open and share, Be vulnerable, Show your ID, as well as be supportive are through setting Goals amongst your team. That you share with everyone.
So at my program we have A Goal A Week. Which are displayed on a dry erase board everyone to see.
These goals are both written as individual goals and then a team goal which everyone contributes to.
The individual goals can be personal or professional for example app. to grad school or create fun line games to play with kids during transitions.
A Team Goal could be relax or past out more red tickets to kids displaying positive behavior.
When written these goals you want to be detail and make sure they are clear and concise this will allow the team to brainstorm on ways to support each other as well as ways to implement these goals. For example don’t just say complete grad app. Say complete grad app by Thurs. or even put a time on it.
By creating these goals you show your ID and admit what you need to work on. By making them visible to all, allows other to support you and give you feedback on ways to work on your goal or just give you friendly reminders did you complete your app. What school are you applying to. What are you studying
At the end of every week or at the start review the goals check in with everyone during a meeting to see if we were able to achieve find out why or why not and make adaptations.
For those that did not achieve the goals have others give suggestions and feedback on different ways to approach their goal. Also have that individual person write the goal with different wording.
The same goals for the team goal.
Challenges of Corrective Feedback
Always come from a supportive place when given feedback for both positive and corrective feedback. Try not to attack the person. Always ask if they need more support.
Your Words and Your Actions are extremely vital when given feed back.
When it comes to your body language how should you present yourself
When it comes to tone (depending on the situation) how should you manipulate your voice.
When it comes to facials expression (depending on the situation) how should you approach it.
With in your language be sure to use I did-for example I did see you improve, I did feel as if we can do better, or We are working hard to improve, or we are all do a great job with this
Always be sure to open up and share how their action impacts you, themselves, and others.
