PRIA (PARTICIPATORY RESE ARCH IN ASIA)
2. Established in 1982, PRIA (Participatory Research in Asia)
is a global centre for participatory research and training
based in New Delhi. PRIA has field offices in 5 states
and linkages with 3000 NGOs to deliver its programmes
on the ground.
PRIA’s work is focused on empowerment of the excluded
through capacity building, knowledge building and policy
advocacy. Initiatives are undertaken in the overall
perspective of ‘making democracy work for all’ – in
the political system; democratic culture in families,
communities, and society; and participatory democracy
3. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN PRIA
Rationale
PRIA has over 25 years of experience, knowledge and learning in participatory-
based approaches to development and related fields of civil society building and
governance.
This vast body of knowledge and learning contains
Historically accumulated
experience and wisdom
particularly unique to PRIA
1 PRIA’s accumulation of
others’ experiences.
Existence of a clear and
coherent knowledge
management system will
make it possible for PRIA
and others to capitalise on
such wealth of knowledge at
all times in near future.

4. The knowledge management system within PRIA aims to utilize its existing as well as
historically accumulated knowledge; and encapsulate knowledge to reach the needs
of learners both within and outside PRIA.
Knowledge management matrix
A knowledge management matrix, called the ‘TIKA’ system is developed. It makes a
simple assessment of each item of raw ‘knowledge’ (whether it be a book, a paper, a
mimeograph, or reports etc) to determine what type of knowledge it represents:
Knowledge about Key Concepts and Principles –
this is K knowledge
Knowledge about Tools, methods and
approaches – this in T knowledge
Knowledge in the form of Illustrative
applications – this is I knowledge
Knowledge in the forms of Analyses, evaluations
and critiques – this is A knowledge
5. Use environments/Audiences
Relevant, and encapsulated information is an essential pre-requisite to
reach the needs of learners i.e. expand knowledge and skills, update
professional expertise, and effectively manage periodic events like
training programmes. To begin with following use environments within
PRIA have been identified
DE Distance Education
SIT Staff induction/training
TC Training course
SS Short seminar
P Public information
SP Staff speaking/lecturing engagement
KDB Knowledge Data
Bank
6. Data uploading according knowledge management matrix (TIKA) under different
Knowledge Category with abstracts.
Scanning of new documents, convert in PDF, Cataloguing (Bibliographic details)
with Metadata in Greenstone Software.
Titles (with metadata) to be entered in this quarter: PRI= 350, Urban
Governance = 104 and NRM = 76.
Re-modification of themes according the need.
New Window for PMU Report, Proposals etc. as part of digitization of PMU
data
Titles would enter in Greenstone as its receipt through PMU.
Collection Building for applying changes (Updating of data in Digital Library)
