2. Maori settlers
• Settlers moved constantly, never staying in
one place for very long.
• When they moved they would pack up, leave
and move to another village.

• A man or women became a chief by being the
son or daughter of a different chief.

4. The Home of the Pa
• There were not as many pa as you think. The
Maori population was mobile. This means
they moved around a lot. At the pa there was
not much gardening and crop-growing.

• All of the people in a hapu belonged to a tribe.

• A hapu is a group with 20-25 people in it but

• They often lived at small villages. Melika
• The villages would be seen as bases to which
to hunt from or help gather other helpful
