- Why does this feel so different than my everyday?I might be thinking: what is this gigantic beige thing? Is it going to hurt me? How old is it? When is the last time someone cleaned it?
- In George’s case – our “everyman” patient – he experiences color in a thousand different, personal ways before he gets to his medical appointment. - It can be the difference between a difficult to use device, and an intuitive one.
- Color can enhance your design. Color schemes also play a role in how the object’s shape is perceived. This is largely due to the amount of contrast that is visible across the object’s surfaces. Clever use of color can accentuate certain features, drawing attention to them, or minimize other features so aren’t readily noticed. In general, lighter colors show more contrast between light and shadow, so the eye will notice these features more prominently.The converse is also true- darker colors show less contrast, and tend to be less noticeable. While black isn’t going to make part of the object disappear, it certainly reduces its prominence. Take for example the model of a handheld gaming device below. The important features are the display and controls, found on the top bezel. The back and sides of the unit are black and are intended to ‘disappear’ in the cognitive sense. The resulting shape, the blue bezel, is smaller than the over size of the product, so therefore the entire unit appears smaller.

- Biophilic design is based on the theory of ‘biophilia’ which contends that human health and well-being has a biologically based need to affiliate with nature. When this physiological theory is related to architecture, it can be deduced that the modern architectural movement in the twentieth century inherently contradicted physical and natural processes of human physiology by imposing artificial meaning on the built environment. In other words, contemporary biophilic design seeks to re-connect the built environment with nature through specific strategies including, but not limited to, the use of windows, daylight, fresh air, plants and green spaces. - Can anyone identify the brand these colors represent?Companies invest countless dollars in research and design to develop the exact color for their brand. And many are protected by trademark.Studies show that color increases brand recognition by 80% and is directly linked to consumer confidence.
- So how does this apply to medical device design? It’s clear that color plays a significant role in our daily lives. And medical environments and the devices in them are becoming an increasingly bigger part of our day to day lives. - To dig deeper, let’s start with one of the most iconic images in medicine. (White coat)As much as20% of the US population suffers from white coat syndrome — in which blood pressure measured in the doctor’s office is a natural reaction of fear because most people associate hospitals and clinics with sickness and injury. This ultimately can result in a reduction of trust in doctors in hospital that can frighten people away from care.
- Don’t get me wrong – white can be good. But we can use it to advantage, not rely on it exclusively.
- Back to our day in the life experience of color… say a patient drives to the hospital for treatment on this road…
- And then, is in this environment for a long test. It’s intimidating. Stark. Uninviting. Stress-inducing.

- Why is medical device so far behind in color and design as compared to consumer goods?It’s about volume.
- Why are we seeing improvements now? Why is the time so ripe for innovation?Because we’ve seen the specialization and branding become more accessible on the supply side.
