The superintendent of Bibb County Public Schools in Macon, Georgia introduced a plan to make Mandarin Chinese language instruction mandatory for all K-12 students. The plan has received national media attention and requires students from pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade to take Mandarin classes, with the intention of expanding it to middle and high schoolers in the next three years. Despite some parental objections, the program is continuing as planned with support from 25 new Mandarin teachers supplied by a Confucius Institute.
