Child Development/Curriculum
Avoid Child-Rearing Practices that Interfere with Healthy Child Development
Ginny Trierweiler
This presentation considers certain child-rearing practices which have developed in the past 60 years
which seem to be detrimental to child development. We will illustrate the differences between the
approaches in compelling ways and suggest that some of these changes may account for increasing
rates of immaturity, narcissism, anxiety and depression among children and youth. It is critical that
early learning teachers and administrators become aware of the differences that make a difference so
they can do what’s best for children.

Recharge Your Classroom with Conscious Discipline
Heather Griffith, Susan Dunn
How many times are we willing to work with children to teach the physical skill of walking? Are we willing
to spend just as much time teaching social emotional skills? Get immediate tools new and experienced
teachers can use. Get five techniques and the items you need to implement them. These tools create a
classroom based on helping kids feel safe and connected in order to get their brains functioning to learn
problem solving skills. Once implemented, these tools will get kids solving their problems on their own
and you can spend more time teaching behavior instead of correcting behavior.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
Tinkering with STEAM Education
Alex Cruickshank, Lauren Weatherly
This workshop will feature stories from Boulder Journey School as well as hands-on STEAM-based
opportunities to tinker with open-ended materials. “Making” and “tinkering” are ideas gaining traction in
today’s education circles, and the more opportunities teachers have to make and tinker, the more excited
they are about problem-solving and inventing. When teachers are engaged with subject matter themselves,
they are better able to present questions, inspirations, and challenges to students. Through these stories,
we will highlight how science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics concepts are intertwined,
rather than separated out into individual content areas.

This session pushes beyond typical family engagement strategies to design new approaches to authentically
include a variety of voices, perspectives and backgrounds within early childhood efforts and programs.
Attendees will consider fundamental distinctions between transactional (treating family engagement as a
means to already established goals) and transformational (treating families as equal influencers of achieving
goals) methods of engagement. Family leaders driving the EastSide Unified initiative, part of the national
BUILD Health Challenge, will set the stage for authentic dialogue by sharing stories and experiences leading
a community change effort designed to level the playing field for young children in East Denver.
Inclusion/Cultural Competencies
Early Educators as Advocates for Inclusion
Alissa Rausch
Significant research exists to support inclusion for young children with special needs. However, the reality

the specific needs of each child in a classroom. If we truly want each child to meet his potential, we must
attend to his individual needs. Based on proven best practices and effective evidence-based strategies, this
workshop will equip participants with hands-on classroom management techniques using examples from
a Montessori classroom. Participants will learn to prepare an environment that will encourage autonomous
learning, and that will free the educator to observe the children, to gather data and to successfully feed
future instruction.
Montessori 101 — Using the Past to Change the Future
Michelle Ewing
In this workshop we will briefly explore the roots of Montessori education with a history of Maria
Montessori and her work. We will then explain the core principles of the teaching method and how they
can be incorporated into all varieties of ECE classrooms and programs. Finally, we will tie our learning
into the new Colorado Shines and how Montessori can help shape the future of ECE. This is an interactive
session where questions and suggestions are encouraged. All teachers and administrators across all
disciplines are welcome to attend this informational session where ‘old’ ideas can provide a framework for
new perspectives in education.

Math Skills That Matter
Bob Sornson – Keynote
Some math skills need more than coverage. They are fundamental to a child’s ability to understand and
learn math, and deserve the time and instruction needed to develop deep understanding. These crucial
skills must be deeply understood to allow students to become successful math learners for life. Participants
will understand the essential sequence of early math skills, and will see hands-on modelling of activities
which help build competency for essential math skills during the early childhood years. Give your students
the experiences they need to develop number sense, and to fall in love with math for life.

Look For It! It’s There! Finding, Embracing and Nurturing the Strength in Families

Family engagement is an integral component of early childhood learning. What happens when families are
viewed, and sadly even view themselves, as lacking necessary emotional, cognitive, physical or financial
strength to be effective partners in their child’s education? What happens when they hold a deficit view of
their own lives? Family engagement is difficult when neither the school nor home recognizes the strength
they can bring. This interactive workshop will present positive ways to change this. Before ending, we will
add the perspective that strength also can be found within the “family” that is your classroom or center.

You Wanna Play With Me? Enhancing Learning Through Dramatic Play
Lillian McCuen
Dramatic play is much more than a few props in “housekeeping”. It is a learning activity, not a place in
the classroom. In this session, we focus on a specific kind of play: dramatic play or, as it’s sometimes
called, pretend play, imitative play, and symbolic play. Join us as we play with puppets and dress up
materials to understand the skills children refine while engaging in role play and make believe/pretend.
In this interactive session, we will explore the four areas of development; social/emotional development,
physical, cognitive and language. Come ready to play!

Safe Sleep for Infants
Theresa Rapstine
Help us keep infants safe! Sadly, between 2009 and 2013, 263 children in Colorado died due to Sudden
Unexpected Infant Death. Younger infants, those between 1 and 4 months old, are the most vulnerable.
These deaths are preventable. Safe sleep practices are important for families to understand, and child
care professionals also have an important role to play in keeping children safe and educating families.
This training meets the Colorado Department of Human Services’ requirement that all staff who care for
infants be trained in safe sleep practices.
Working with Challenging Behaviors in the Preschool Setting
Lois Arndt, Bridgitt Mitchell
Early childhood educators work with challenging behaviors on a daily basis. Do you ever wonder why
some of those behaviors really irritate you while others don’t? Are you able to connect a child’s challenging
behavior with difficult situations that are a part of their lives? Do you wish you had practical strategies that
would address these behaviors as well as build resiliency both for yourself and the children you work with?
These questions are addressed in this workshop and participants will leave with a general understanding
of possible causes of behaviors as well as techniques that can be helpful in the preschool setting.

Formative Assessment through Child Observation: A P-3 System Approach
Nicholas Ortiz, Daryl Gagliano, Sharon Triolo-Moloney
Observational assessment tools have long been a hallmark of developmentally appropriate formative
assessment in early care and education settings. Recently, public kindergartens have begun using these
tools as a result of school readiness assessment requirements. At the same time, the Colorado Department
of Education is developing a plan for a sustained, aligned P-3 education system. Come learn from a panel
of CDE experts about Colorado’s vision for a P-3 approach to education, how this continuum of authentic
and formative assessment fit into a P-3 system, and the nature of assessment requirements at the
preschool and kindergarten levels. Note: this session is targeted to preschool and kindergarten teachers
and program administrators who are using observational assessment tools.

Literacy and Writing
Early Intervention Using Emergent Writing Techniques: Bridging the Gap Between
Research and Practice Through Research-Based Staff Development.
Andrea Larson
There is a clear correlation between oral language impairment and later literacy problems. Researchers
have recently turned their focus to how this affects the area of early writing. Because teachers may have
knowledge of strategies, but have difficulty incorporating them in the busy school day, this presentation
will model ways to bring it all together and assist teachers by packaging the concepts intuitively and neatly
together. This demonstrates that it does not need to be difficult to address early writing strategies for a
wide variety of needs.

It is much more than creating a feeling. It is about fostering an outward way of being grounded in a sense
of oneself and one’s connection to the broader community — both for the child and for the adult.
Bare Naked Activities for Preschoolers! Transitioning on Purpose.
Lillian McCuen
So often we find ourselves with lots of transition times and lots of children looking to us to fill that down
time…so let’s make the most out of every minute. These transitional times are perfect teaching times for
small and large groups. The secret is being intentional! Transitions from one activity to another need to
be planned. Join us as we spend time thinking about the learning outcomes of some of these activities
and when would be the most effective time to use them. Be prepared to play, because the easiest way to
remember, is to play yourself! And the best part…most of these activities require little to no materials

We are all in the people business, and in the people business there are two guarantees; reward and
disappointment. It’s the reward that keeps us coming back. The key in our work is to learn how to
minimize the disappointment and increase the reward. Emotional Intelligence allows for us to accomplish
this in our personal and professional lives.

Supporting the Social-Emotional Needs of the First Plane of Development
Abigail Miller
If self-discipline is a natural process, which occurs spontaneously in the child as he grows older, develops
his faculties, and acquires more experience in more sophisticated social environments, what is the role
of the adult guide and classroom environment in supporting this development? We will explore the ways
in which social-emotional development is embedded in all aspects of Montessori theory and practice, and
the ways in which the Montessori classroom is designed to meet the social-emotional development of
children. We will utilize attachment theory, developmental psychology, and neuropsychology to consider
the predictable stages through which children develop socially, and then explore the ways in which
the classroom can meet the needs of the child as fully as possible, removing obstacles to development,
working with the child’s intrinsic motivation, and addressing mistaken behaviors.

Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Recharge Your Classroom with Conscious Discipline Heather Griffith, Susan Dunn How many times are we willing to work with children to teach the physical skill of walking? Are we willing to spend just as much time teaching social emotional skills? Get immediate tools new and experienced teachers can use. Get five techniques and the items you need to implement them. These tools create a classroom based on helping kids feel safe and connected in order to get their brains functioning to learn problem solving skills. Once implemented, these tools will get kids solving their problems on their own and you can spend more time teaching behavior instead of correcting behavior. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Tinkering with STEAM Education Alex Cruickshank, Lauren Weatherly This workshop will feature stories from Boulder Journey School as well as hands-on STEAM-based opportunities to tinker with open-ended materials. “Making” and “tinkering” are ideas gaining traction in today’s education circles, and the more opportunities teachers have to make and tinker, the more excited they are about problem-solving and inventing. When teachers are engaged with subject matter themselves, they are better able to present questions, inspirations, and challenges to students. Through these stories, we will highlight how science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics concepts are intertwined, rather than separated out into individual content areas. Do you wish you had practical strategies that would address these behaviors as well as build resiliency both for yourself and the children you work with? These questions are addressed in this workshop and participants will leave with a general understanding of possible causes of behaviors as well as techniques that can be helpful in the preschool setting.
