3. Introduction:
Salmonella uganda is bacteria of
Salmonella spp. Salmonella uganda
is responsible for food borne illness
called salmonellosis. A number of
its serovars are serious human
pathogens.
Properties is Salmonella uganda:
•Rod-shaped,
•Flagellate,
•Facultative aerobic,
•Gram-negative bacterium. 3
7. Recent Outbreak
•In June, 2019, this outbreak appears total
of 81 people infected with the outbreak
strain of Salmonella uganda were reported
from nine states of USA.
•Previous outbreak of Salmonella uganda
in Louisiana has prompted a Texas
company to recall a ready-to-eat (RTE)
pork product in 2013.
7
10. Sign & Symptoms:
•Most people infected
with Salmonella
develop diarrhea,
fever, and stomach
cramps 12 to 72 hours
after being exposed to
the bacteria
10
11. Complications of Salmonella Infection:
•In some people, the illness may be so severe
that the patient needs to be
hospitalized. Salmonella infection may spread
from the intestines to the bloodstream and
then to other places in the body.
•Children younger than 5 years, pregnant
women, adults 65 and older, and people with
weakened immune systems are more likely to
have severe illness.
11
12. Treatment
•The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without
treatment.
•you need to take care not to dehydrate, a common concern with diarrhea
and vomiting. Adults should drink water. For children, you can use an oral
rehydration solution, such as Pedialyte
If your doctor suspects that you have a salmonella infection in your
bloodstream, he or she may suggest testing a sample of your blood for the
bacteria.
•Medications
•Because salmonella infection can be dehydrating, treatment focuses on
replacing fluids and electrolytes. Severe cases may require hospitalization
and fluids delivered directly into a vein (intravenous). In addition, your
doctor may recommend:
1. Anti-diarrheals.
2. Antibiotics
12
13. Prevention
We should follow these steps for preventing foodborne illness:
•Wash your hands, kitchen utensils, and food preparation surfaces,
including cutting boards and countertops, before and after handling
fruits.
•Wash fruits external icon thoroughly under running water before
eating, cutting, or cooking, unless the package says the contents have
been washed.
•Keep fruits separate from other foods that could contaminate them,
such as raw meat and seafood.
•Refrigerate fruits that you have cut up, peeled, or cooked within 2
hours
