Dear
Bangladesh,
My old friend,
I call to mind the first juncture of our
meeting in Chittagong back in 1919
of my arrival from Myanmar.

Interestingly, I never came to Dhaka
from Chittagong. It was only after 28 years
after my return from Kolkata to Dhaka I came
to know you.
Nonetheless, my voyage took an enticing
rhythmic state when it became the core
reason of our friendship.
It’s hilariously surreal that people are
controvert regarding my genesis.

I still smile at the
debate about my
origin…..
It has been vocalized about my emergence
for the personal use by the European jute
exporters living in Narayanganj back in
1930.
Then again, It has also been promulgated that I was
conveyed by two Businesman from
Mowlovibazar,Dhaka in the year 1936 or 1937

I still remember in the early
days how your people were
shyto use me. I used to run
a lot as I didn’t have wheels!
Only after I had three-wheelson
me they started appreciating me…

It’s been 98years of our friendship. I think I
deserve some more appreciation from you for
being your best friend.
I hope you don’t ever forget me,
sincerely your friend “Rickshaw”.

Dear friend, do you remember when a man named Salauddin
Mahmud of Dhaka acquired the Number 1(one) license plate of
rickshaws. He parched the number 1 rickshaw license at the cost of
6000 taka.
In Dhaka city that time market price of one Bigha land was also
around 6000 taka.

It was in Rajshahi during 1940’s
when I started displaying my unique
art to the people. Each district has its
won rhythm of art.

But then came stormy
days in our friendship.
Things started to turn ugly.
In December 2004, under pressure from the
World Bank, Dhaka City Corporation
(The City of Dhaka) announced that it would
ban rickshaws.
But our well-wishers didn’t bother to come
forward to help us!

It was during period 2013, We soon had another
crack down in our friendship when you became closer
with my cousin who is quite electrifying! ‘Motor
Rickshaw’ as you nicknamed him.
But people never liked him as he was risky and not environment friendly!
I almost ended up in the Rickshaw Graveyard at Mirpur.

This was a story about how Rickshaw set
its first footsteps in Bangladesh.
And how eventually it associated itself
with the daily lives of people with a lot of
ups and downs on the way.
A particular story of Bangladesh that
remains untold till date

The love that goes on makes me feel all that
good inside.
My traversing in a swift momentum along with
the soft sweet smell of romance lofts up my
spirits.
It's like the perfect setting for closure and
romance
