EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME: CRITICAL THINKING 2 
Meet Chef Richard…A Critical Thinker 
I would like to introduce a person I truly admire as an expert thinker: Chef Richard. A 
person truly needs to know this man, in order to experience the dedication and compassion he 
holds in his profession. Chef Richard is a critical thinker because he has developed a 
knowledgeable understanding of his trade, a thoughtful perspective on important ideas and 
timely issues, as well as the capacity for insight and intelligent judgment. 
First, I will begin by giving some insight as to what Richard does as a chef. He prepares 
excellent breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, including a variety of themed buffets and plate 
presentations. In the interim, Richard determines food requisitions and orders with purveyors, 
manages costs and labor controls, and, when required, he also acts as a training chef. In offering 
an unlimited variety of foods for banquets or private parties, he meets with catering customers, 
on the preparation of their special orders and requirements. 
Next, I will explain the clear qualities Chef Richard possesses, which I feel qualifies him 
as a critical thinker. He is very open-minded to new techniques and ideas, in that he will 
compliment and encourage someone who can offer suggestions. On the other hand, he is very 
knowledgeable as well as confident with his opinions, and is willing to share his knowledge with 
others. Richard is mentally active, as he can coordinate beyond belief! I am amazed how he 
manages his work and everyone else’s, simultaneously, and has it magically all come together. 
This Chef extraordinarily accomplishes all this, in addition to being curious enough to always 
look for a better method or improvement to an end result, while he portrays the independent 
thinker who can multi-task without being directed.
EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME: CRITICAL THINKING 3 
Furthermore, in addition to being a skilled discussant in daily meetings with his boss or 
the client’s event planning, Richard demonstrates insight by carefully planning and coordinating 
on a timely basis to meet a deadline. In as much as he is self-aware of professional ethics by 
objecting to others taking shortcuts to achieve an inferior result, he is totally committed and 
passionate about his work. However, he will admit his passion occasionally gets in the way of 
his clarity. Consequently, as a chef, Richard must work with a variety of foods and their 
preparation, using his creative methods and ideas. Therefore, creativity this is the last quality of 
being a critical thinker and primary requirement of being a chef. 
In addition to the aforementioned attributes, Chef Richard puts his entire body and ‘soul’ 
into his craft, and in some miraculous way, accomplishes whatever it takes to develop a 
delectable work of art, and the final result is: A presentation that “looks too good to eat!” Chef 
Richard has proven to be one of the best in his field – a “chef extraordinaire,” always going 
above and beyond because he is a critical thinker.
