EXISTING SITE
The Maison de Lumiere Orphanage for Girls is envisioned as a
wonderful home, a place where anyone would enjoy spending time.
The complex is made up of rooms and spaces reminiscent of
classic Moroccan architecture and gardenscapes, inviting
exploration of local culture through the many comfortable and elegant
spaces. The outdoor gardens integrate with the interior spaces so the
girls can move freely and comfortably throughout their home.

06) LIBRARY AND PRAYER ROOM
The vision for the prayer room and
library is to create a calm and
inspiring environment for prayer
and study. Built-in furniture creates
intimate spaces for reading while
larger open areas provide space for
prayer. A separation between the
library and the prayer space is
curtained for privacy and steps down
from the library area. It opens up to
a two story dome with points of light
shining down from the sky above.
14) COMPUTER ROOMS
This indoor quiet study room provides
the girls with computers to do their
homework and learn new skills for our
technological world.
19) GIRLS’ BEDROOM
There are ten bedrooms with four girls
in each room. These rooms are
designed for comfort and community,
with provision for ample personal
space for each girl and shared space
for conversation and play. The deep
window seat illuminates a carpeted
seating area, while the private
sleeping and study spaces are
placed on the perimeter of each
room.
04,05,06) CARETAKER, COOK AND
GUEST/VOLUNTEER SUITES
The rooms placed closest to the main
entry of the building provide visitors
and the caretakers with generous
quarters for short and long term stays.
Each room is comfortably equipped
with a private bathroom, queen-size
bed, a seating area, and a wardrobe.
The quality of these rooms is in
keeping with the idea that anyone
staying here experiences the comfort
and qualities of being at home.
10) DINING ROOM
In this beautifully appointed room,
the girls have their daily dining
experience together. This room is
separated from the dish washing
room by an open partition for girls
to enter and wash thier own dishes.
The deep red of the room, along
with richly patterned tiling and lamp
fixtures, create an elegant ambiance
where the girls share meals each day.
08) KITCHEN
This space has generous natural
light from the east windows. The
warm colors and intricate tiling
continue the theme of reds and
vibrancy of the dining room.
15) COURTYARD
All rooms connect to the central
courtyard, creating a central
gathering space for the girls and
guests. Comfortable seating gives
visitors a space to sit and chat with
the girls.The traditional Moroccan tile,
native plants, arched colonnade and
elaborate entrance lead to the outdoor
space opposing the front entrance.
