Many archeological authorities date the earliest beads as far back as 38,000 BC when a Neanderthal man began
crafting pendants from grooved teeth and bones. Throughout human history, different ancient cultures made
different forms of beads according to the materials that were available to them. While the Egyptians fashioned
beads of gold, the Greeks used substances that ranged from wood to semi-precious stones.
The history of the glass bead that is common today stretches back approximately 5,000 years to ancient
Mesopotamia. Considered items of great value, these beads were common objects in the tombs of their deceased
owners.
Venice established itself as a bead-making mecca in the 1400s after legendary explorer Marco Polo brought
exceptional precious stone beads back from Asia. Local artists challenged themselves to reproduce these
precious stone beads in their medium of choice: glass. Classic Venetian bead types include the conterie (seed
bead), the rosetta (chevron), and the blown bead.
