Overview
Goal: To learnwhatgroceryshoppingislike inAmerica.
- Grocery storesinAmericaare usuallybigandindoor
marketscomparedto a small store that sellsonly
one type of food.
- In America,barteringortradingitemstogetwhat
youwant doesnot happen.Thismeansyoucan’t ask
for the price to be lowered.
- There are differentsectionsinthe store thatsell
certainitems.(See mapforhelp)
- You will nothave a personthatpicksthe foodand
givesitto you.
Public Transportation to the Grocery Store

Goal: Learnhow to ride the busand trax.
- Utah Transit System(UTA) Busand Trax
- Go to a busstop
o You can get onand off the bus at each stop
- Usingthe bussystem
o What the colorsmean:
 Green– routesrunevery15 minutes
 Blue – routesrun every20 minutesor
more
 Red– Expressroutesorfast bus
 Yellow –Inter-countybutnotexpress
 Purple – FLEX routes
o There are numbersonthe routesmappedout
that indicate the directionthe bussesrun.

How to find an address
Goal: To understand directions tofindalocation
- First,youmust knowinwhatdirectionnorth,east,south,andwestare.Below are some
examplestofigure thisout.

 The sun alwaysrisesinthe east,movesalongthe south,and setsinthe west
o Geographical ways:
 The streetsignssay north,south,eastor west.The farthernorthyou headthe
numbersgetbigger,the furthersouthyouare the numbersgetbigger,andthe
same ideaworksfor eastand west.
 However,if younotice youwantto go north,the numbersgetsmaller(500
southto 400 south).
 The same goesforall otherdirections.
- Once you’ve figuredoutwhatdirectiontogo,use the busmap and codes to helpyougeton the
rightbus.

Buying Food
Goal: To learnhow to use yourfoodstamps.
As a refugee,youare givenfoodstamps tohelp youbuyfoodeveryweek.
How foodstampswork:
- You receive aplasticcard and a pin number
o Memorize thisnumber.
- You may onlybuyfoodwiththiscard. Notmedicines,
petfood,or alcoholicdrinks.
- Whenyougo to purchase your food,there will be a
machine where youcanslide yourcard through.
- Followinstructionsonmachine forpurchasing.
Budgeting
Goals:To learn howto organize money soitwill lastthroughthe endof the month.
You are givenacertainamounteach monthrelatingtoyour householdneeds. Onthe fifthdayof each
month, youget yourmonthlyfoodstamps.Divide the moneyintoequal amountsforeachweek yougo
grocery shopping.
For example:
- Kumar wasgiven$400 for hishouseholdof 3people onJune 5th
.
- He needstodivide $400 equallyintoeachweek.
o He shouldput$100 ineach of the fourweeks

The Game: Food Scavenger Hunt
Goal: To helpyou learnthe locationsof food.
Rules:
1. Findeach itemfromthe listinthe grocerystore
List:
- White Rice
- Carrots
- Oranges
- Beans
- Eggs
Plastic or Paper bags
Goal: Learnwhat these are usedforand where theyare located.
- These are locatedinthe produce andfreshmeatareas.
- Use themto putyour produce inso theydon’tgetgerms.
- Use themto putyour freshmeatinso that the meatjuice doesn’tdripeverywhere.
- Do not putproduce in the same bag as the meat.
- Put eachiteminitsown bag because the pricesare differentwhenyouweighthem.
o Examples:
 Put all the applesinone bag
 Put all the onionsinanother
 Put one package of chickenina bag
Weighing Produce
Goals:
1. Learn howto weighproduce.
2. Learn howto figure outprice youwill paybasedonproduce weight
- Scalesare set outall around the produce area to helpyouknow how muchit will cost.
- Put produce ina plasticbag.
o Once again,keepthe differentfoodsapartbecause the pricesare different.
- Thenput theminthe scale to weighthem.
- You will reada weightandthendothe math to figure outthe price you will pay.
- Example:
o the price of onionsis$0.40 per pound.
o youput the onionsonthe scale andsee that itweighstwopounds.
o $0.40 x 2 = $0.80
o So the totallycostfor the onionswill be 80 cents.
Meat
Goal: To learnthe difference betweenfresh,frozen,andprocessedmeats.
Fresh:
o These meatshave neverbeenfrozen
FrozenfromFresh:
o These were once freshbutthenwere putin the freezer.
- Sometimesthe pricesare differentforfreshandfrozen;although,theyare bothokaytobuy.
FrozenProcessed:
o These pre-preparedfoods(cut,shaped,addedingredients)
 These couldhave beenfrozen forawhile.
 Aftera longtime infreezer,the qualityof the nutrientgoesdownforthem.
- Whenbuyingmeat,itisalways healthiertobuythe non-processed kind.
End Dates
Goals:To learnwhatenddatesmeanand where theyare located.
- There isa date on every packagedfooditemthatgivesanestimate of when
that foodwill gobad.
o Bad foodcan make you sickbecause of the germsgrowinginit.
- Make sure to eat the foodbefore itreachesthe enddate.

foods.
