RECRUITMENT at the incomplete
Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth has
community leaders divided as to how
the drive for medical staff will impact
on Western Australia’s rural doctor
shortage.
The $1.76 billion hospital in
Perth’s southern suburbs is due for
completion in late 2013 and will
require more than 3000 staff to deliv-
er health services.
Federal MP Tony Crook said the
new facility had the potential to put
further pressure on rural WA’s doctor
shortage. “Currently we’re nearly 100
doctors short in regional WA, 85 of
whom are considered to be in areas of
high need,” Mr Crook said.
“I certainly hope it’s not the case,
but obviously a major state-of-the-
art medical facility like FSH will need
staffing and if they require 3000 staff
– a fair component of which will be
doctors – they’ve got to come from
somewhere, don’t they?
“Any doctors coming away from
regional WA back into the city or
interstate obviously puts more pres-
sure on our doctor provision.”
Mr Crook said doctor provision
was a Federal matter and peer and
Government support needed to be
provided to keep doctors in rural and
regional locations.
“The Southern Inland Health Ini-
tiative through the Royalties for
Regions fund is doing some good
work in doctor recruitment, but it’s
got a long way to go and it certainly
won’t be the silver bullet for solving
doctor issues,” he said. “The FSH is
not due to open until 2014, but the
doctor shortage in regional WA is not
going to be solved in two years.”
Eyre MP Dr Graham Jacobs was
optimistic the FSH would provide
increased facilities for regional gener-
al practitioners to train in specialised
areas. “I don’t see the FSH as a nega-
tive for us as far as country doctors
are concerned,” Dr Jacobs said.
“I see it as positive because that
allows for placements for doctors to
do these blocks in certain sub-speci-
alities we can’t offer in our rural clin-
ical schools, such as anaesthetics and
babies.
HEALTH PRESSURE
PHASE two of the Kalgoorlie Hospi-
tal health campus redevelopment is
on track to be ready for patients and
staff by the end of this year.
The $55.8 million upgrade on Pic-
cadilly Street began in January last
year after the completion of the palli-
ative care unit upgrade at the end of
2010.
Located in the new building will be
the revamped emergency and medi-
patients will be located in close vicin-
ity on the same floor as existing surgi-
cal theatres.
“It is anticipated the construction
will be completed by September, to be
followed by a period of testing and
commissioning ready for use by staff
and patients before the end of 2012,”
Ms Michalanney said.

clearly be seen from Piccadilly Street
and will provide a new entrance for
the hospital,” Ms Michalanney
said.
“The new ED has been designed to
promote the flow through of patients
whilst considering their privacy and
the safety of staff.
“It’s really coming along.”
Ms Michalanney said the new
wards will ensure the most acute
cal imaging departments as well as a
new four bed observation ward and
six bed special care unit.
WA Country Health Service rede-
velopment project manager Alicia
Michalanney said the new design
promoted privacy, safety and an easy
flow of patients around the emergen-
cy department.
