2. History of Chlorin
● Chlorine was discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele
● Discovered it through reacting hydrochloric acid with
Manganese Acid
● Failed to realize his acheivement, mistakenly believing it
contained oxygen
● Identified as an element by Sir Humphrey David in 1810
3. What is Chlorine
● Chlorine is a non-metal
● Found in group 17 which is the
Halogen group
● It’s symbol is Cl
● David suggested Chlorine comes
from Greek latter Chloros
● Chloros means yellowish green
which is Chlorines color
4. ● Symbol- Cl and has electron configuration
2-8-7
● Atomic Number-17 and Atomic Mass is 35.453
● Diatomic molecule with the formula Cl2
● Halogen
● Able to combine with metals and non-metals
Electron Configuration (2-8-7)
6. ● Ionization Energy: 1251 and Electronegativity:
3.2
● Melting point: 172; Boiling point: 239;
● Density of 0.002898 and Atomic radius is 100
● At STP, Chlorine is a greenish-yellowish gas
7. ● Rarely occurs freely in nature, usually combined (NaCl or Cl2)
● 3rd most abundant element in oceans and 21st in crust
● 9th most abundant element in the human body
● Was an early chemical element when reacted with Mucous Membranes
● Leaking chlorine containers are extremely hazardous
8. IB Question- How can our ability to think change the
course of history?
Our ability to think can change the course of history because our ideas influence
and become apart of the whole world. By scheele and David discovering what Chlorine
is, they changed the course of history because chlorine now is used is many real life
situations. Besides killing dangerous germs like bacteria, viruses and parasites, chlorine
helps reduce disagreeable tastes and odors in water. Chlorine also helps eliminate slime
bacteria, molds and algae that commonly grow in water supply reservoirs, on the walls of
water mains and in storage tanks. Chlorine is also used to filter and clean pools.
