1. POEM-ON THE BRIDGE
-KATE GREENAWAY
SUMMARY
The poem is divided into two parts: the first part is about what the speaker
would like to see, and the second part is about what the child would like to do.
In the first part, the speaker expresses her desire to see a fish swimming in the
stream under the bridge, a water rat gliding from one bank to the other or a
spider resting on the yellow stones.
In the second part of the poem, the speaker describes how she wants to throw
a stone into the water and watch the ripples spreading out in circles or to float
a flower-boat and imagine it sailing to the sea.
QUESTION-ANSWERS
1.How old do you think the speaker might be? what makes you think so?
Ans: The speaker seems to be a child, eight to ten years of age, because she is
excited about standing on a bridge and watching various insects and animals
and doing things such as throwing stones and sailing flower-boats.
2.The poem does not mention where the speaker is standing except in the
title. why do you think this has been done? what effect does it create?
Ans: This has probably been done to create a bit of mystery in the reader’s
mind. As the poet does not indicate where the speaker actually is, the reader
actively imagines the scenery around the speaker with the help of the imagery
and vivid descriptions in the poem.
