The alphabet is a set of basic written symbols or letters that represent the sounds of a spoken language which can be arranged to form words. The most widely used modern alphabet today is the Latin alphabet which originated from the Phoenician alphabet and is used to write most European and many non-European languages. Alphabets allow for the development of writing systems and provide a standardized set of symbols to represent the sounds of speech.
