1. Abstract
How can innovative and alternative medicines help provide effective care against ligament
based sports injuries by protecting against contributing factors and common complications
of those injuries?
In sports, athletes suffer ligament injuries that require surgery and lengthy rehabilitation in order
to recover from. The rate of these ligament injuries has increased over the last ten years.
Therefore, research was performed in order to find a procedure or multiple procedures that
would help protect against common contributing factors and complication of ligament injuries.
Through evaluation of peer-reviewed articles, it was found that biomechanical, anatomical, and
neuromuscular factors contribute to ligament injuries. Furthermore, using a medical database
called Kareo and a professional interview, loss of motion, degenerative joint disease, and
increased risk of re-injury are common complications of ligament injuries in sports. However,
after reviewing more peer-reviewed articles, it was found that gene therapy, cohort studies, and
stem cell therapy can help identifying and treating sports based ligament injuries. Gene therapy
and stem cell therapy help protect the ligament from the common complication discussed
previously, and cohort studies help doctors better diagnosis patients that exhibit contributing
factors earlier than before. Using this research, the diagnosis and treatment of ligament injuries
in sports will be better effective and efficient than ever before.
