Virginia Is for Movie Lovers: Films Shot in the Commonwealth

Movies | Proofthat Virginia is for (film) lovers
HOLLYWOOD IS 3,000 miles away, yet, at times, it's felt so close to
Hampton Roads - in terms of what we've seen and experienced here through
the years.
Our Tidewater region has produced big-screen stars like Margaret Sullavan
and Mark Ruffalo and memorable film settings like Norfolk Naval Station or
the Ocean View Amusement Park.
Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks have spent time shooting movies here. Even
Mae West, one of Hollywood's greatest sex symbols, stepped on our soil.
Then there's RobertDuvall, the Oscar-winning actor who likes the
commonwealth so much he decided to spend the latter part of his
3. accomplished life living in Orange County. He's prone to tell anyone who
asks that "Virginia's the last station before heaven."
Which brings us to the impetus for this story about movies shot in Virginia.
Monday night will be the second installment of a three-picture, mini film
festival dubbed "Virginia Is for Movie Lovers," hosted and curated by me.
The series, showcasing films with Virginia ties, continues at 7:15 p.m. with
a screening of Duvall's 1979 film "The Great Santini" at the Virginia
Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach.
The series continues March 30 with "Duel in the Sun," starring Virginia
native Joseph Cotten.
These movies star actors connected to Virginia. But in planning for the
festival, I began considering films that were shot here. With that in mind,
here's a (by no means complete) nod to movies filmed in our great
commonwealth:
"America"
Directed by D.W. Griffith in 1924, the film depicted the American
Revolution, including Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown. It was criticized,
though, for historical inaccuracies. Lillian Gish departed the production
when Griffith could not pay her. The film, which also has a location credit
for "Tidewater," Va., left Griffith with millions of dollars in debt.
"BrotherRat"
Filmed in 1938 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. This comedy-
romance starred
Ronald Reagan and his
then-wife Jane
Wyman.
"CaptainPhillips"
Tom Hanks haunted
Hampton Roads while
4. he was in town during the summer of 2012 filming this true tale about the
pirating of Captain Richard Phillips' ship and crew. Norfolk Naval Station
and Virginia Beach are listed as locations, but most of what's shown in the
film of Hampton Roads comes off the coast, on the water.
"ColdMountain"
The 2003 Civil War epic features a scene filmed at Williamsburg's Carter's
Grove Plantation, where Jude Law appears with a hard-working ox who
usually performed only for tourists. Forthe scene, Hollywood had to import
longer-stalked cotton blossoms that would photograph well. Another scene,
in which Philip Seymour Hoffman finds a saw, was filmed on a river near
Richmond.
"Dirty Dancing"
As Baby learned to dance, every woman in America swooned to the moves
of Patrick Swayze. The 1987 movie was shot in-state at Mountain Lake and
Pembroke - as well as several North Carolina locations.
"Evan Almighty"
This 2007 comedy starring Steve Carell as a Noah-like figure who builds an
ark and predicts a flood was shotin Charlottesville, Waynesboro and
Staunton.
"The Four Seasons"
Charlottesville was the setting for some outdoorscenes in this 1981 movie,
which was directed by and starred Alan Alda alongside Carol Burnett. It was
a comedy-romance about four middle-aged couples who seemingly had
weathered all the divorces and traumas of their married friends. Seemingly.
"The Frogmen"
This 1951 film starring Richard Widmark and Robert Wagner brought the
cameras to Norfolk. If you're wondering about the title, it wasn't a crazy sci-
fi flick. "Frogmen" was the term for Navy SEALs before the cooler acronym
was adopted.
"Giant"
5. Although still debated, the consensus is that the opening scenes of this 1965
classic, depicting a horse farm where Elizabeth Taylor hosts visiting Texan
RockHudson, was filmed near Charlottesville.
"Gods and Generals"
This 2003 prequel to "Gettsyburg" followed the tale of Gen. Thomas
"Stonewall" Jacksonand his battles leading Confederate forces during the
Civil War. It was shot in various locations - Staunton, Leesburg, Lexington,
Virginia Military Academy and, supposedly, land owned by Robert Duvall.
"Hearts in Atlantis"
Anthony Hopkins
starred this 2001
adaptation of a Stephen
King story, which was
shot all over the
commonwealth - from
Virginia Beach to
Staunton, and
Petersburg to
Richmond.
"Lassie"
This 1994 update for the canine superstar depicted a family that has moved
from the city to "the wilds of Virginia" and is helped by a homeless collie
who protects them from a wolf, rescues them from a raging waterfall and
offers unflinching loyalty. It was filmed, partially, in Virginia's Tazewell
County.
"Lincoln"
The 2012 film, directed by Steven Spielberg, was filmed in Richmond and
earned Daniel Day-Lewis a best-actor Oscar. The Capitol offers a tour of
some of the film sites.
6. "Marnie"
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the 1964 film starred Tippi Hedren after
Princess Grace of Monaco was forced, by her prince, to turn down the lead.
The horse-riding scenes were filmed in Middleburg, near the haunts of the
Kennedys and Elizabeth Taylor. And that town's Red Fox Inn played a hotel
that housed the namesake character. Additional scenes were shotin the Blue
Ridge Mountains.
