Acquisition of Queensland’s Callide coal mine
Australian-owned private company Batchfire Resources Pty Ltd (Batchfire) is pleased to announce its
100 percent acquisition of the Callide thermal coal mine in central Queensland from Anglo
American.
“This a red-letter day for Batchfire, Queensland and especially the people of the Banana Shire and
central Queensland,” said Batchfire Chief Executive Officer, Peter Westerhuis.
“Callide Mine has been a major economic and employment driver for Biloela and central
Queensland for more than 70 years, supplemented by the commissioning of the nearby Callide
Power Station in 1965.
“The Callide B and C power stations will be leading customers for the mine’s output under long-term
supply contracts, essential for major power generation facilities with a combined capacity of 1,510
megawatts.
“We have established a constructive working relationship with CS Energy, which owns Callide B and
50 percent of Callide C in a joint venture.
“We appreciate the support we have received from CS Energy and are committed to fostering the
constructive, working relationship established with CS Energy during the sale process.
“Callide Mine is a mature and significantly sized coal producer, supported by an experienced local
workforce, first class logistics and export infrastructure.
“With significant remaining recoverable thermal coal reserves Callide Mine has a bright long-term
future as a low cost domestic and export producer,” Mr Westerhuis said.
Batchfire’s acquisition is on a ‘walk-out, walk-in’ basis meaning that Callide Mine will continue to
operate uninterrupted.
Mr Westerhuis and members of his senior management team are scheduled to brief Callide
employees on Batchfire’s operational priorities tomorrow (Tuesday 1 November).
“Our first priority is to engage with the Callide workforce, contractors, suppliers and the broader
community to ensure the smoothest possible transition after six years of uncertainty over the mine’s
future direction, which I can assure them is positive,” Mr Westerhuis said.
