  3. 3. Poetry in the 50s <ul><li>Philip Arthur Larkin was a British poet, novelist and jazz critic. </li></ul><ul><li>Larkin is regarded as one of the greatest English poets of the latter half of the twentieth century. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Biography <ul><li>Larkin was born in the city of Coventry, England. </li></ul><ul><li>He was educated at King Henry VIII School Coventry and St. John's College Oxford. </li></ul><ul><li>After university, Larkin worked as a librarian in Shropshire, before moving to Hull in 1955 where he was appointed as Head Librarianat the university's Brynmor Jones Library. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Philip remained the rest of his life in Hull, where he wrote all his poems. </li></ul><ul><li>Early in his career he also wrote two novels: Jill (1946) and Girl in Winter (1947). </li></ul><ul><li>From an early age Larkin was obsessed by his own mortality and many of his poems are about death. </li></ul>
