The 2022-23 permanent Migration Program will have a planning level of 195,000 places, with 142,400 places allocated to the Skill stream and 52,500 places to the Family stream. A larger permanent program will encourage migrants to integrate into the Australian community and make personal investments. It will also increase labour supply to help businesses experiencing skills shortages and promote retention of temporary migrants already in the country. The program aims to address skill and workforce shortages exacerbated by COVID and an ageing population.
